“FDA has reviewed several ‘electronic cigarettes’ and determined that those products were making ‘drug’ claims,” said Susan Small, a public affairs technician in the New England District FDA, in a written statement. “We have detained and refused several such products on the grounds that they were unapproved new drugs.”

The FDA considers e-cigarettes to be “adulterated devices” and is reviewing the products on a case-by-case basis, Small said.
that right there is the best part of the article, in my opinion, for it reiterates the "on a case by case basis" bit, though I dont agree with their use of the term "adulterated".

“There is no strong evidence that shows they improve one’s chances of quitting,” said Kate Rogers, state director for the American Cancer Society.

As Ronald Reagan would say, "There you go again." WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT QUITTING? These are not for quitting, are not sold for that and only a fool would advertise these for smoking cessation. They are for continuing use of nicotine in a far safer fashion than inhaling cigarette smoke. Dunces speaking for well-intentioned health organizations must come to understand that, even if they never accept it.

Those public comments, however, are what I've come to expect following news articles. We do not enjoy public support. Our e-cigs are seen as foolish toys by many eyes, a kind of adult pacifier for addicts without willpower. These people, like many health organizations, want us to quit or die. No other choice. Get out of our world, one way or another.

Take off the rose-colored glasses and read the reality in those ugly, ugly comments. Those are four out of every five voters, and a reason Congress will approve Waxman/Kennedy later this month. Sure, we can stack a poll, but the comments speak loudly.

Not sure who's rockin the rose-colored glasses, but it's not uncommon for those with the least to say, to say it the loudest. And usually with lots of CAPS and redundant punctuation!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not convinced that the mental giants that commented necessarily represent popular opinion. At least it's not what I have experienced in my very limited time with vaping, but then I am sure there are many people just dying to prove me wrong.

I agree with your comments. The mentality out there is that nicotine is an addictive substance unless it's pharmaceutical, then you are considered on the path of enlightenment. There is even a Nicotine Anonymous program complete with a 12 step program and an admission one is powerless over nicotine. The Anti-Smoking brigade has done an excellent job of saturating the media, and the public, with hateful rhetoric. It is reminiscent of the prohibition era in the early 1900s. The claims of an association of nicotine with cancer is so strong that any public relation's corrective efforts are met with scorn, or down-right hostility. In this new era where smoking is not acceptable behavior, anything that resembles it is is also unacceptable.

If HR 1256 passes, and I suspect it will, alternative smoking choices can overcome the new delivery aspect very quickly. New research can use a cross-sectional study of a small number of participants for about 20-60 grand. The study could use a spirometer (objective measure), self-report indicators of improved well-being (survey), and amount of cigarettes decreased to fast-track approval. Studies of quality of the juice are already out there, what is lacking are test subjects and e-cig effects.

This is exactly right TB,
I myself love smoking. No I diden't like the smell all over me and everywhere I have been. I diden't like hacking in the morning and I like to be able to take a deep breath without coughing.
I simply made a switch, an alternative to those nasty smelling cigarettes to in my mind "a cleaner way of smoking". Like the days of a choice of using leaded gasoline or unleaded gasoline. The media is programmed that people use these to quit smoking. Many do quit as I quit by accident. I was using me e-cig and noticed I had not smoked as many analogs. I just put analogs down because the cleaner way worked for me. Untill the media sees these as an alternative cleaner way of smoking and not a aid to quit smoking, We are going to have problems. The media screws everything up. Just look at all the rumors right here on these boards.

The reason our congress will vote the new FDA bill into law is the very reason the majority of those posting comments after this article are so negative: ignorance and hysterical pandering to ignorance. Oh, smoke is so bad! If it looks like smoke it must be smoke, or worse, it's Chinese! There is no reason, will never be reason, and unfortunately these people are allowed to procreate. How do we fight it? By slow degrees, with patient explanation of our devices and a willingness to "look ridiculous in public". That comment, btw, really got me to laughing :)

I really liked the jerkoff that commented that they look ridiculous and that he didn't want to go into a restaurant and see someone that looks ridiculous.
Well if that's his reason for passing more laws, then comments after news articles should be illegal too cause I don't want to get dumber reading comments like his.

Do not just read the article read the comments at the bottom. The last one is right this is not just do we get to keep are nic habit it is to also keep are right to choices to have that habit... With big brother looking more and more over are shoulder even a small win like this would be nice (like SE and the FDA).

You liked that one huh? Yours truly. lol

i felt obligated to leave a comment. Figured i could at least have some fun with it. Here's what i wrote.

"All i have to say is.... WOW! If you anti's could actually talk to people who use these things, and see the drastic changes they have made in peoples lives, you would be shocked. Some of the stories would bring a tear to almost anyones eye.

But instead, let's ban them so the Gov't can pay for it's over inflated self. Let's take the 'Health' side as a thin vale for money. Sounds like a great plan. While we're at it, let's pay large sums of money to every failing major corporation that we 'must have.'

Oh wait, we are already doing that last one."

Those comments were blatant trolls, nothing more. You'd be wise to pay them little mind and remember the reality of the reactions we get when we vape in public, which in my experience are overwhelmingly positive.
