Intorduction and Info on Kanthal Ribbon

Hi Everybody,

Great forum and folks here from what I have seen. I quit smoking a couple of weeks ago and have been vaping instead. Using Ego twists with a Vivi Nova and Kanger Protank. I'm not new to forum life (supermod on a national car forum).

I don't have enough posts to put this in the thread I wanted (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...0042-resistance-wire-kanthal-nichrome-14.html). If a mod could please merge it there I think folks will find it helpful. It should be obvious from the content I'm here to contribute and not to spam.

Vivi v3 head; 4/5 wraps of the "RIBBON (0.3x0.1mm 2m) HEATING FLAT WIRE kanthal" around two strands of pre-boiled "natural hemp twine" with an extra strand over the top - my first rebuild

The other people were getting resistance too low to read with their VV/VW mods using a larger gauge - I haven't seen anyone report trying this size.

The resistance of the .3x.1 is on par with 32 gauge round Kanthal at 48.9 Ohm/m

Mine - 2.6Ohms

Vape = more flavor and volume than I have had on any vivi or kanger protank head, great TH

Oh, and Greek stamps are freakin' cool too. Delivery was expedient other than having to pick it up at the USPS office because I wasn't home to sign.

I am having a lot of luck with 5 wraps on this setup. I made a post about an issue I was having with ribbon wire, but maybe I should mention it here.

When you are making your final turn to the post, be sure that the ribbon is not kinked slightly on the coil, as it will cause you to have an overly hot coil right out of the gate.

I hope more people can collaborate on the ribbon wire as I think it is much more convenient than standard.

Interesting - how much resistance are you getting from that?

I think the smaller stuff I'm using would be easier to not kink, but I don't have an RBA yet and have only used it on protank and vivi heads so far.

Aside - I got 2.5 ohms with a 4/5 wrap on the protank too.

Its not exactly kinking its just turning from | to / if that makes sense. That slight turn makes all the difference.

You can buy Kanthal A-1 ribbon from Kidneypuncher here in the USA. The 0.1mm X 0.5mm is roughly 30awg and you can fit a 2ohm coil in a vivi nova with it.

you might want to try to pre heat the wire before you wrap. should help soften it up when it makes the transition.

Interesting - How many wraps are you using?

Someone in the comments said they got 2 ohms with 9 wraps on an RBA or something - that seems like it would be difficult to fit in there.

from my experience, ribbon wire fires too hot and it basically burns much of the flavor... I always prefer twisted wire all the time

anyone getting fluctuating ohms with the ribbon wire? everytime i wind some coils with flatstuff... the ohms jump up +-1.0 ohms depending on heat and im SUPPOSING dryness of the wick?

I just wrapped a coil in a protank with .04 4/5. I am getting 1.3 ohms and the vapor is a lot better and flavor. Have to let it wick for like 5 or 6 seconds after 2 big puffs though because the flat ribbon burns out the liquid faster. I hope the gunk build up is reduced like I read on another thread. Altron you probobly have a short somewhere. It should stay at the same ohms and not move.
