Trapped by Schrödinger's cat....
Now this is a great discussion! :D

I mentioned that there were additional safeties in place previously.
Now, I had previously read through this thread you linked months ago and forgotten it!
I think that the additional mAh is negligible. However the AW cells have one major thing that I consider a definite benefit:
THe have a much sharper cutoff at the end of duty cycle.
I can not elaborate on why this is of benefit just yet, however I think once it is made clear you will agree.
I also believe that the cutoff activating as it does at 2.7V is a good thing.
That other cell does not initiate until 2.5V which I personally feel may be too close for comfort.

Sorry for the book, and thank you for talking about this here. I feel it is important. (as should you all) :)

you made perfect sense... it is indeed the same internal Panasonic NCR18650- not rebranded, they have different PCBs and different detail in the wrapping and shock protection.

Redilast being made with a slightly more impressive anode contact using a rubber seal where AW used plastic.
Unrapping Redilast VS AW:
RediLast 2900, AW 2600, AW 2900 Battery Unwrapping (w/ trustfire 2400 - post 50) - CandlePowerForums
EDIT: Gave wrong link first time

Redilast running a bit longer on the bottom end, probably related to cut off circuit....
Review/Comparison of AW vs Redilast.

The Redilast looks to be a bit sturdier than the AW....

The guys over at CPF haven't said anything negative about them yet. If they aren't better they appear to be at least equal to the AWs in quality.

And in case you were worried about discharge down to 2.5V....

FWIW- high transient spikes (depending on how long) may make IMR the way to go...

The transient is less than a millisecond.
Lesser cells fail in this aspect. UltraXXXX and TrustXXXX both have this failing in every test I have performed.
No threat should equal no cutoff. The others can not "see" the difference.

Agree- good discussion-I don't mind swapping batteries once a day so most of the time IMRs are a better choice, but i appreciate that for some it's a hasltle - I think the debate over which is better (Redilast or AW) will probably go on for a while over at CPF... at least till the 3100mAh panasonics are out.... fun to watch from the sidelines.... I'm sure you'll have a good explaination (you already hinted at surges) on the lower cuttoff introducing some risk.

Sorry if this is burried on page 3 somewhere...I'm sure you have a built in voltage cutoff in there...is it user programmable or are you pre-setting it? Or not ready to say just yet? ....

Thanks for this! :toast: Your explanation is pretty much as I thought but I wanted confirmation and to flush it out for others as well. I just do not have the technical knowledge to speak authoritatively on the subject (just a basic understanding that matches). Only prob with techno-speak is that it goes past many who may not ask for clarification. Thanks again. :)
briefly: you are probably exceeding the Protected RCR123's current rating and getting some current limiting from the protection circuit. The IMR can deliver more current. The same could apply with the 18650 if the spike causes the current draw to clip or shut off the current.
Here's a thougough explaination of battery types.

ADD: after you read that the IMRs are safe chemistry whereas the Redilasts are protected lithium Ion....

Not at liberty to say just yet, but I am happy that there is discussion.
Don't worry about where it is buried, it's all up here now right? :)

Ok, I'll give this a shot - since it's not the 17th yet :)

1. The Dominator
2. The Dominatrix
3. The Master
(OK, may have been a bit of a theme there-haha)

4. Vaporus Maximus

...and the best for last :)

5. The Omega - The Last PV You'll Ever Need

There is already a mod named Omega.

We crossed streams.... not sure why they even listed xxxxFire in the battery list .. . I guess some devices can only take them because of size issuess. Maybe OK with smaller batteries but people gotta understand you get what you pay for and 2 inches from your face isn't where you want to be skimping.

Not at liberty to say just yet, but I am happy that there is discussion.

I'll take that as an invite to suggest that you have it user configurable... maybe protected, but different batteries will be able to support different cutoffs for different batteries - i.e. maybe 2.6 or 2.7 for protected, 2.6 for IMR and ... what if we start seeing LiFePO4's in 18650's from the top tier cell companies? 2.2 (will your circuit even run on that) ?

just a suggestion-

I was considering this, however, what if a user has it on the incorrect setting by accident? Bad news.
Some things need to be made certain. One is to err on the side of caution.
While I realize that I have no control of the device once it leaves me, I am trying to make it as versatile yet SAFE as possible.

That's what I meant by making it protected....You could make it difficult to set, and reset to 2.7 when the battery is removed or the threshold is reached .....
Just hit me - other hand... what if the user set it for 2.0 thinking it was 2.2... well with an IMR or LiFePO4, you just ruined the battery - it'll sit in the charger ...with a protected battery, if the protection is broken, i see your concern- tough call... "Set at your own risk, Not responsible for your fat fingers"?

again just a thought ... glad to be discussing it, glad to see you thought of it already, and respect the need to keep it safe - not that big a deal as we don't have suitable LiFePO4s and you're not giving up that much on the IMRs at the bottom of the curve if you set it up for protected cells...

I am going to have to disallow this change. :p

Your entry of "The Tesla" was one of my personal favorites! :D

However I will enter is as a non-eligible name entry.

You are all great. I must be tired, I am getting all warm and fuzzy from lack of sleep and constant work....

I just gotta add this to my name list as I see people guessing 4 names, or I'd be willing to swap out one of my three, The Tesla...

SHADOW'S NAME CONTEST
4. or Replace The Tesla - THE SHADOW BOX :vapor:

Yeah, but WE LIKE YOU "all warm and fuzzy" don't ya know that Shadow?
O.k., I agree I LOVE the name THE TESLA and the MAN who it's named after, too!!! :2cool:
