Trapped by Schrödinger's cat....
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a commonly used technique for controlling power to inertial electrical devices, made practical by modern electronic power switches.

The average value of voltage (and current) fed to the load is controlled by turning the switch between supply and load on and off at a fast pace. The longer the switch is on compared to the off periods, the higher the power supplied to the load is.

The PWM switching frequency has to be much faster than what would affect the load, which is to say the device that uses the power. Typically switchings have to be done several times a minute in an electric stove, 120 Hz in a lamp dimmer, from few kilohertz (kHz) to tens of kHz for a motor drive and well into the tens or hundreds of kHz in audio amplifiers and computer power supplies.

The term duty cycle describes the proportion of 'on' time to the regular interval or 'period' of time; a low duty cycle corresponds to low power, because the power is off for most of the time. Duty cycle is expressed in percent, 100% being fully on.

The main advantage of PWM is that power loss in the switching devices is very low. When a switch is off there is practically no current, and when it is on, there is almost no voltage drop across the switch. Power loss, being the product of voltage and current, is thus in both cases close to zero. PWM works also well with digital controls, which, because of their on/off nature, can easily set the needed duty cycle.

PWM can be used to adjust the total amount of power delivered to a load without losses normally incurred when a power transfer is limited by resistive means. The drawback are the pulsations defined by the duty cycle, switching frequency and properties of the load. With a sufficiently high switching frequency and, when necessary, using additional passive electronic filters the pulse train can be smoothed and average analog waveform recovered.

High frequency PWM power control systems are easily realisable with semiconductor switches. As has been already stated above almost no power is dissipated by the switch in either on or off state. However, during the transitions between on and off states both voltage and current are non-zero and thus considerable power is dissipated in the switches. Luckily, the change of state between fully on and fully off is quite rapid (typically less than 100 nanoseconds) relative to typical on or off times, and so the average power dissipation is quite low compared to the power being delivered even when high switching frequencies are used.

Modern semiconductor switches such as MOSFETs or Insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are quite ideal components. Thus high efficiency controllers can be built.

PWM is also used in efficient voltage regulators. By switching voltage to the load with the appropriate duty cycle, the output will approximate a voltage at the desired level. The switching noise is usually filtered with an inductor and a capacitor.

One method measures the output voltage. When it is lower than the desired voltage, it turns on the switch. When the output voltage is above the desired voltage, it turns off the switch.

Hopefully this helps explain in a bit more depth.

Ok my turn.. I have been following this thread for the last few days and it has been interesting, and I really like that there are so many people who are not afraid to share their nerdiness here in the thread about watts, ohms, current, PWM, and so forth. Its all very interesting and is important and relevant to the evolving Vaping technology that is emerging today. The only thing that I saw missed here in these last few post is what I like to call the (if it works great...who cares factor) LOL I'm a firm believer that when I buy a new PV or device that has some tricked out features, and VV settings, juice feeding options, etc.. I don't really put too much thought into the resistors begin used in the resistor bridge on the switch, or the type of plastic the feed bottle made out of, or what kind of glue/epoxy was used to hold the led inside the unit.. what I personally care about he most is really simple.

1: Does it vape great all the time?

2: How does it feel in my hand?

3: Does it look cool?

4: Long Battery Life?

5: how long will it last before it breaks?

This is what I want personally from a mod or PV/Device when I'm shopping around and when I'm buying the dang thang. I personally don't care if there are "little green squirrels inside cranking a dynamo" to get the amps and volts i need to have a good vape !!! LOL Hey if I'm blowing clouds!! and I'm blowing them all day long day after day.. then yeah that's what i care about most!

Thanks to all who are supporting this thread and keeping it alive!

PS: I also want a PV that can feed the atomizer using a micro pump... Heheehe:p

Yes absolutely.

2: How does it feel in my hand?

Always a factor of import and hopefully quite well addressed.
Our friends here will tell us their thoughts once they have them :)

3: Does it look cool?

I personally think so, but again beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I hope that our friends here like the design once they are able to see it.

4: Long Battery Life?

Should be decently long life for a single cell power source.
That is the beauty of efficiency in design and application.
It is also entirely dependent upon personal habit.

5: how long will it last before it breaks?

Barring very harsh treatment, a long time to come.
(And no we are not releasing specifics YET :p )

DONE and DONE! :)

All of the above are so true, and the last one is the icing on the cake for me, I'm just jealous Magnetron and Shad0w have these and I want mine.! hehehehhe

DONE and DONE! :)

Woo Hoo, I can't wait 'til January/February time - forget Christmas:| - it means nothing this year...

Who's my valentine?:)

btw Shad0w, sorry I'm electrically illiterate, so thanks for the lengthy explanation, conceptually I'm almost following along. I think factually I'm way outta my depth.

Absolutely not a problem :)
I find that if the bare facts are there it is actually a simpler way of conveying the information rather than trying to rephrase it.
There is no need to feel left out or to not understand brother, we all help eachother here.
As long as you try to follow along, you are actively participating, and that is what is important.

just a quick fyi - I'm a girl (sister) - this way it's not too weird that I said:

not that's there's anything wrong with that

i only have like 5 bottom fed juice mods. but you know there is always room for innovation. I just want it to look as good as it vapes. I already had my heart broken by another device that strung me along and turned out to look like a giant universal remote...not saying any names. But after reading this thread and at the urging of others, I believe even if his thing looked horrible I would still buy it. Just use it at home, but i would still buy it...lol have a great night guys, gotta go to work

Shadow- I'm really glad you got that point- felt like I was arguing with you but was just opening up the discussion if only to suggest that the whole thing about regulating power is an interesting idea but for the most part accademic..

We didn't miss any of those things about asthetics, fit & finish, and performance at all- that's kind of where we started... we just know we already beat most of those questions to death a couple of weeks ago - I'm glad you brought us back there.. but we ended up pretty much in the same place.... looking for pictures...

As much as I want a peak, to be honest (someone is going to chuck a tomato at me), I'd suggest you be safe with those pictures and show them to a very small, discerning and trusted audience off line- get some good feedback before you show it - boxes reminscent of garage door openers, TV remote controls and harmonicas with antennas will not play well and I'd hate to see your idea of cool and revolutionary go the way of one or two other recent designs that have been a bit too over the top........

Either way you guys are great, and it's terrific that you're hosting and participating in a good open conversation like this.. I wish you all the best and plan on being here when you launch.... hopefully with cash in hand...

Can we start a poll on how good Cinna-Rollz is going to taste in this thing? :vapor:

No need for a poll. It will be awesome! :D

Will there be a mad rush when it is made available, with the inevitable backordering ... or, is there a pre-order list so we can reserve our place in line?

We will be setting forth our plan for this as we get closer my friend. Don't worry, if you have been in the thread and participating, you will have one when they are made available. :)

Sorry for that! Now I know and will rember from now on. (and thank you for not letting it goo too far, I would have been mortified  )

Have a wonderful night at work my friend. I promise you it is not going to be a huge box. Or even a box for that matter ;)
I may be a minimalist, but I have an abiding love of sinuous symmetry and clean flowing lines. I truly hope that I do not disappoint you or anyone else.

I didn not at all take is as argument Jim. I value your input and contributions here and they are most welcome.
Due to having to play things close to the vest on this it pains me to agree. However as I said, if things are in order and we are ready to give a sneak peek on Christmas, I will do so. :)

Ohhh. Well, that was only my second post in the thread. I've been lurking <sigh>

Very interested, just haven't had much to say. I'll be around though. :)

Not to worry, just have fun and chat with us more often!

Mario are there going to be color options?

I am thinking for the first run, it will likely be only one color.
This was a point that I keep going back to in my head, but I feel that there may be some wiggle room once we are to that point. Maybe.

In case you are wondering (and I know you are) I like black. It is subtle, sexy and always in style. Just my .02 ;)

Salivating at the sensual sentiment :p

Enjoying all the little bits of alliteration are we? :D
