You may want to look into the cotton wrap method. I saw a video by Quigsworth yesterday explaining the process. It eliminates shorts & improves wicking. Mesh/Cotton hybrid wick Bluegrasslover's method - YouTube
Try oxidizing the mesh further or maybe check into the rolling paper method. I think a link to that video was posted here before. If not ill try to find itIm at work tho haha. Some people like using cotton around the wick area where the wire would go to give it a buffer but I would worry about burning the cotton.
