Bensalem pa.
Hi,Dave here from Bensalem Pa. north of Phila. I have been a analog smoker for fifty years. Two years ago I started RYO cigs for the cost and not as many chemicals. The RYO shop I use has started to carry e-cigs and I tried a hit off of one and inhaled it like I was used to and choked.I noticed on the ride home I wasnt craving a cig. I started internet searches and found this forum. I am full of questions even after doing two days of intense web searches that seem to contradict each other. I want to buy a good starter vaping kit.Every time I find a suggested kit I Google the parts such as clearomizers and people hate them, they leak, dont last long etc.I dont mind doing some work as I am a hobbyist ,flash lights ,knives etc. and I am familiar with batteries and chargers, voltages and such. I also have access to two brick&mortar shops not too far away. Can I get a little guidance as to what to buy? I will be ok with spending a little more for the right stuff. Thanks Dave

Hi Spada!

Welcome to ECF and congrats on your decision to quit smoking.

As with most products, what you will find in google searching are the people that are having problems and looking for answers. Vaping is a very personal experience and what works best for one may not work the same for another. Only you will be able to decide on which kit looks best for your needs. That said, I can make some recommendations for a couple starter kits that many have had good success with.

1. For a good, basic, starter kit, look at this one ... Kanger Evod Starter Kit

2. For a more advanced starter kit, try this one ... Kanger Mini Protank 2 Starter Kit -VV ... it's currently sold out at the shop, but it's a good place to start.

I highly recommend Vape Dojo for their customer service, good juices (my opinion), and great prices. If you see something the site says is sold out, call them as often their inventory is not as updated as what they have in stock.

Good luck with your search! HTH!

Welcome home my friend. so far away but same story with you. I was handrolling for not only same reason with you but I had learned rolling cigarettes because in 1974 there wasnt any cigarettes available in my country only tobacco (one can say tobacco dust too) so I learned. and went like it as it might have happened again I suppose. And as yours my tobacco shop began to sell e-cigs and I too tried and like you choked (so I cant say with first intake I knew I could have got rid of smoking with these devices it was with 2nd intake :))
From than I bought the very device and liquid which made me think so. didnt mind being cheated (If there was 10 places in the world for cheating traders the area should take first five) and after that I found Turkish a cigarette forum. and I got a decent red kiwi (German made ego type) and ce4v3 clearos together with them cheap and efficient less trouble beginner kit. Now I have a joytech evic for longer battery life and vision vivi nova for clearo. Red kiwis are still intact and I get along well with my set.

For suggestion part
you can not know how hard to find any enjoying liquid so what you had is a miracle too so go grab it. Also nicotin level, read yourself this forum is full of beginners who cant find appropriate VG/PG/Nic level liquids.
Other suggestions are in this forum too whatever you get you get a spare too (Batteries clearos liquid etc)
So in time you will find your best device according to your preferations and desire (For menthol type liquids you should have a glass clearo not plastic :p)
This is a vast money consuming habit so begin from the beginning you will be astonished how many methods there are to vape.

But most important of all begin as soon as possible save your breath, taste and health

A slight correction to nmackan's post, if I may. The issue of "glass" vs. "plastic" regarding tanks is because some highly acidic nicotine juice...such as citrus flavors, cola, cinnamon, etc. can break some plastics. You CAN use plastic sided tanks but need to be sure they are polypropylene...not polycarbonate. Menthol does NOT fall into the "acidic" category. If it has citrus in it...or other acidic flavors mixed in, yes it would. But a straight menthol, even with peppermint or other mint flavoring etc. is fine in ANY kind of tank...plastic or glass. Just thought I'd clarify that.

I vape menthol exclusively. A very strong menthol. I am not restricted at all what sort of tanks I can use. I have some tanks over 2 years old that are as good as they were new even with frequent heavy use (carto tanks).

If you are an hobbyist, you'll feel right at home vaping.

There are no device without issues in the world of vaping, Every thing will leak, not wick properly and be frutrating until you figure out a way for them to work just right.

Every Vaper once said: "What the hell is wrong now!!! This thing worked flawlessly yesterday!!!"

Advancing up the vaping ladder with Ego's & Mods

I'll second the MVP as a great starter-advanced e-cig device. High quality personal vaporizer with a long lasting battery (2-3 days per charge), inexpensive and no need to purchase additional batteries/charger. The kit comes with 1 or 2 iClear clearomizers.

You'll have a choice of juice attachments to put on the MVP. It will accept both ego & 510 threaded attachments. Is It a Carto, a Tank, or What? Clearomizers are the easiest for a novice to learn on, but my preference is cartotanks.

Your coughing upon trying an e-cig for the first time is not uncommon. Vapor is different from smoke. It took your body time to accept smoke into your lungs, as will vapor. Be aware that you need not inhale vapor into your lungs to absorb the nicotine that is in it. Nearly all the nicotine in vapor is absorbed in the lining of the mouth and nose. Do a "mouth inhale" - take a draw as if you were sucking on a straw in a thick milkshake. Hold it there for 1 or 2 seconds. Then inhale a little into your lungs, or exhale completely through your mouth and nose. As you develop a tolerence to the vapor, you will be able to inhale all the vapor into your lungs like you were able to with the smoke from cigarettes.

Drink plenty of water. The Pg/Vg that is in the e-liquid is dehydrating and that water must be replaced.

VG supposedly provides more vapor while PG supposedly more throat hit. I say supposedly because I only use VG so I wouldn't personally know. I find the throat hit to be just fine with VG. Anyway, these guys are right.

A good VV or VW (variable volt, variable watt) device will get you started on the right foot. I like my behemoth of a PV:

If you're not ready to build and wick you can use an iClear30S or Protank3 for a damn good vape with those stock products. I found the Protanks require a little more nursing along than the iClear30s.

Congrats on your desire to stop smoking analogs! you're in for a fun ride! I was just in Philly for the bike expo, and stopped at ecigg. Look them up, the guys in there are great! They'll get you set up just fine, and they make some great juices to boot. I ended up spending an entire afternoon there instead of sightseeing like I wanted to...lol.

Good luck!
