does the vanilla, high nic taste "not vanilla-ey"

Hard to say. Never liked vanilla!lol
Everyone has different taste responses. Not sure if your gonna find the answer your looking for.
Try someone Else's vanilla. Preferably if they have samplers for sale so you don't have to make a large investment to taste test, so that you may compare.
As for your expectations of liquid tasting like vanilla ice cream or vanilla pudding or whatever your idea of what this vanilla eliquid should taste of, All I can say is my chocolate, does have a chocolate like taste...but more like a fake chocolate taste........like a Yoo-hoo.

Try vaporcountry. I don't have the high mg but both the vanilla and the cream are out of this world to me. They are quick and only 4.99 for 10ml bottle. Hope for you the high is as good as the low!
Vanilla seems to be a hard flavor to reproduce. I was going to say try TW, but that is the one you are not thrilled with. You might also like to try the vanilla from Wet Your Stick. It is pretty good.
