Is it recommended that we clean the connector end of the batteries?

Not sure just how clean you want it, but I'm pretty happy with just wiping it with the toilet paper I use to clean up while refilling juice.
Wipe the outside threads a bit, then kind of push it inside the ring and give it a twist or two. I don't go inside the batt hole, though... haven't noticed any need.
I also do this on the batt end of the cartos.

Generally get a little black dirt off during cleaning, and it's just whenever I happen to feel like doing so. Nothing routine.

I do the same as Kembial (except with a tissue) but only once in awhile. I clean the battery end of a cart to make sure it doesn't get on the battery, so the bats stay very clean.
I imagine if someone is in the habit of sticking a battery without a carto into their pocket or floating at the bottom of a purse, then it could pick up some dirt/dust/lint/etc. and might need more cleaning, but mine is either in the pouch or the pcc when I'm out, or in a cup on my desk when not being used.

I found unscented baby wipes to be killer on keeping hardware and your hands clean.
