Is nicotine in e-juice synthetic or real nicotine, extracted from tobacco?

I was just reading an article by the FDA and they claim that all nicotine in e-cigs are fake/man made and not real. To my knowledge this is not true, I've tasted nic juice before and I can specifically taste the nicotine in the juice just like I could when I used the nicotrol inahler when I first quit, the taste is identical to the inhaler nicotine that is FDA approved.

Just thought I'd ask, is this another bs attempt to turn something that isn't into something that is?

This could vary from vendor to vendor, but LeDean from Mountain Oak Vapors (best liquids around, in my opinion), had this to say: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...emium-tennessee-e-liquid-441.html#post6333517

"No we don't mess with natural extraction. For future regulatory concerns we would like to be as disconnected from tobacco as possible. What they call "TSNA"'s can be found in naturally extracted liquids, and while there is no direct evidence that these things are BAD, the perception is that they are and the FDA has previously used it as a swinging point against e-liquid manufacturers (as was the case in their initial studies of e-liquid).

That said, I think it's also difficult to control the nicotine that is extracted in these processes. But at that level I am no chemist and that is another reason we've opted not to get involved with that process.

Long story short, we want to know exactly whats in the liquid and to disclose this information to the customers for their safety and peace of mind. We try our very best to give an authentic tobacco experience with our blends using various artificial tobacco flavors."

I'm pretty sure all nicotine in juices is extracted. I don't think nicotine could be synthesized in a cost effective way, and really it would still have to be cleaned up extensively to get rid of by products of synthesis (I'd guess).

There may be different ways of extracting nicotine. A post up above mentions 'natural extraction'. I don't know what that means, but that could be an alternative to a different method of extraction rather than some sort of synthesis.

Oh, I clicked on the link, and it appears it is talking about tobacco *flavors* not nicotine.

Here was the question that they were responding to

TIA.

David- do you happen to have the link to where you read this information from the FDA?

i agree. it seems like creating nicotine would be a million times more expensive and laborious than extracting it.

From the several times I've poked at this, the great majority of nicotine is extracted, from regular tobacco. It's just normally done by chemical companies, not by eliquid makers, because it is a well-documented process to extract nicotine, readily done in bulk.

Nicotine USP can still start from tobacco leaves. USP deals with purity, contaminants, doesn't care about whether something is synthetic vs. starting from organic material. WTA is a different thing, specifically aiming to pull out other alkaloids too, not just the nicotine.
