is soapy ceramic taste still an issue?

You have every right to be excited...it absolutely is "worth it". Don't get discouraged initially...that often happens until you master building coils. It is NOT difficult...just watch the videos and follow them to the letter, and you'll do fine.
Once you get the hang of building good coils, and reapeatable ones, you'll be blown away with it. I've taken to building a new coil every time I fill the tank, and it's wonderful...

BTW,I use tweezers now to twist my coils ends;much easier than with finger tips.

Try a lockable haemostat Martin I use fly tying hackle tweezers that lock closed too
