I'm still pretty new to vaping, and this is a lot more complex than the old AIO I used to use (before I accidentally let some liquid drip into the micro-USB charging port ><) so I figure I'll ask here.

Basically, I'm not getting much vapor, and the mouthpiece gets far too hot after only a couple seconds. That means I can only take very short drags, which I assume is why I'm only getting small puffs of vapor. Also, it could be my new liquid, but the throat hit is wayyy harsher than I'm used to, despite it being almost identical to my previous liquid...30mL, 6mg nic, 70/30 VG/PG, watermelon flavor...only the brand is different. Might be the temperature of the vapor though?

Here's the data shown on the display screen:

POWER
36.5 W
COIL 0.42
AMP 0.00
VOLT 3.90
PUFF 004

Any ideas? My initial thought was to open the airflow more, though I'm not sure exactly how to properly loosen the mouthpiece or whatever in order to achieve that.

Not all companies/brands use the same nicotine in their liquids, they buy from different distributors so the different brand of nicotine used can have a harsh throat hit, more so when you mix your own, if the liquid isn't steeped then the hit will be harsh.

The tank it came with? It might be a good idea to know exactly what tank it is as well as how many milliters it holds, if the coil is a dual, quad, etc wrapped coil.
Reason is if it's a smaller tank which holds less liquid and the drip tip is closer to the coil it won't cool off as fast as you use it, the liquid amount helps to keep the coil cooler also.

Are you chain vaping it? How long do you take between hits?

The more information the better.

Only 4 puffs so far, no vapor, harsh taste and hot mouthpiece...sounds like you didn't prime the coil before use. So it is causing dry/harsh hits and overheating. Open the tank so you can see the coils/wick and make sure to fully saturate that wick with your juice, then reassemble, turn the wattage down to say 20watts and try some initial vapes. Once it is producing some vapor and not overheating, then turn the wattage up (5 watts at a time) until you find the sweet spot.

Do that procedure every time you put in a new coil.

If your voltage isn't jumping all over, and your wattage and resistance are fixed, the problem is likely the tank and not the mod.

See the advice above.

Sounds very much like you burned a coil with dry wicks. It would be irreparable and require a new coil.

The reason it would be getting unbearably hot would be due to no airflow. If you can't suck air through it because the wicks are burned and not picking up liquid, you can't cool it down either.

It cools down real fast after I stop firing it. I haven't fired it for longer than 2-3 seconds...once I noticed the mouthpiece heating up way too quickly, I stopped it.

I'll try ScottP's advice, though. Is there any way to tell if I've already burned the coil?
Yes, it will taste so bad you will cough constantly.

It may be that you just got a bum coil. It happens, mass produced stuff. Try switching out the coil, make sure you prime it, fill up the tank and let it sit for 15 min or so. Take a drag out of it a couple of times without pressing the fire button while it sitting. If it was me I would drop the power down to 30W and start from there.

The Geekvape Shield Sub Ohm Tank has bottom airflow. Along the bottom there is a ring around the tank that you have to turn.

If you were using an ego setup before, this new setup just may be more powerful than you are used to. With that said, you do need to let the airflow in, particularly at higher wattages. Priming the coil is important as well, and as you move up slightly in wattage, you may find a comfortable vape at lower wattage than you expect.

What resistance coils were you using before? 0.4 isn't crazy low, but it is on the lower side. If you were using higher resistance before, that may be part of your woes, although it could definitely be the coil. Like others have said, clean everything out, get the airflow open, and then try vaping moving up very slowlllly in wattage. With better airflow, a well primed coil, and the correct wattage, you may find it less harsh.

It may be the same juice as before, but is it a new bottle? If so, it may not have steeped enough to really even out the juice before you got it, and may require more steeping time. Or, on this setup you may need slightly less nic, I'm not sure.

Best of luck, I hope you get it sorted out.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I found the ring I had to rotate to open up the airflow, and I made sure I had enough liquid seeping where it needed to go, and inhaled a dozen puffs or so without firing it (is that what's called priming)? I lowered the wattage to 20 and steadily increased it, stopping at 27.5 and it's been working great!

I still have coughing problems if I inhale too much vapor - not even touching the roof of my mouth with my tongue while exhaling helps after a certain point :p However, the nasty throat hit is gone, so all is well.
