This an awesome forum folks.

History: 53 years old smoked 3 packs a day 30+ years until 3 years ago quit cold turkey for a year. Started puffing on a cigar and who'd a thought Im now back to a pack of cigs a day.

Anyway Im going to research and order my first PV today. I must admit I am overwhelmed at all of the terminology and different stuff associated with e-cigs.8-o

Thanks
Al

Welcome to ECF. Great place to get the info you need yo!

Most would reccommend you get one of these:

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510
Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye eGo

(click the discount code tab for 20% off)
They are both 510 threaded devices so if you want to get any additional attachments they will need to be 510 threaded also.

If you want one that's cig size (about superking size) get one of these:

Smokeless Image | Only The Best Electronic Cigarette | Starter Kits

use code 'heatwave' for 23% off but not sure if it's still active anymore.
The volt is a Kr808D-1 threaded unit so you will need to get Kr808D-1 threaded attachments such as cartomisers.

With the ego or riva, if you get a 650mAh battery one it's not much bigger than a superking, just fatter, about the size of a big cigar and should last upwards of 6 hours.

The volt should last about 2 - 3 hours but is automatic so it'll feel more like a cigarette in that there's no buttons to press.

That's a really limited selection but honestly, the most reccommended units for their performance and value for money.

Next comes eliquid. 24mg is considered high nicotine content and some suppliers only sell 18mg or lower. 18mg should be fine but if you feel you'd need it 24mg will be stronger. As a general rule you only absorb 10% or less nicotine and it's Xmg per milliletre. So 24mg is 24mg per ml and there's about 20 drops in a ml. You'd get about 1.2mg per drop (very roughly) which is a few puffs really and would absorb around 10% of that, so you'd end up with an estimated 0.12mg of nicotine per drop absorbed. So you can dose yourself off how many cigs you had I guess very roughly.

You tend to have two options for liquids. They are pg or vg based. Pg is stronger on your throat and retains flavour better but produces less vapour. Vg is less flavourful, easier on your throat and produces more vapour. Why most prefer a mix of pg and vg to get the best of both out of their juice (flavour and vapour and throat hit). The higher your nicotine content is the stronger it will be on your throat too.

You have options for what to use on your units too. You can use cartomisers which is probably the easiest portable solution as you just put liquid in the filling (about 1ml if it's regular size) and vape it until it's getting dry then put more in it.

You can use an atomiser which doesn't hold very much liquid at all but can be the best performing way to get nic if you don't need it to be portable.

There are also tanks which hold much more liquid but their performance can be shaky and aren't the easiest to get going. The most portable but possibly the most difficult to get working reliably.

Hope that helps a bit. Shoot any questions you want, everyone here would be glad to help :)

Welcome.

Since you also puffed cigars, you can probably deal with the form factor of a larger PV, like the Riva, .... or an e-gar. Food for thought. The cig-sized stuff is OK, but don't expect much battery life from them.

Do tons of research on the possibilities as there is no single answer...... it depends on you.

I used to enjoy a good cigar, not against having one still eventhough i haven't tried one since I started vaping, and the fatter battery of an eGo (or many of its clones and rebrands) felt so nice and familiar. I'm quite happy it did too cause apparently the "looks just like a real cigarette" types are not strongly recommended!

The Wonderful World of Vaping: An Illustrated Guide to E-cigs is a beautiful six-part illustrated piece of work by DonDaBoomVape was a lifesaver (ok ok a moneysaver) when I was choosing mine

It sounds like you really like the "action" of smoking...like most of use here...so the switch to vaping is a good choice. Since you already like a cigar...+1 to the eGo or Riva 510...battery will last all day and gives good vapor production. The Riva battery is a little stronger(volts)...but the eGo has a shutoff mechanism(5 quick button presses) so easy to put in a pocket without activating the battery.

Good luck on your journey:)

Welcome Al!

I just joined this forum this week and let me tell you that I was overwhelmed, myself. After a few days of reading, I'm just beginning to understand it all. I never imagined vaping was so involved and I wish I had found this place before I placed an order for my first ecig. You will be amazed at how quickly you learn and absorb all the info here and learn what you need from your PV. The good folks here on ECF are so wonderful and encouraging!

You can get overwhelmed reading and reading. I wouldn't have blown $190 on a mall kit if I'd known about ECF but I would have probably smoked for a couple of more months researching on the site. You'll spend less on a kit than a carton of cigarettes. Just dive in, buy a kit, some cartomizers and 18 and 24 mg juice, the smallest bottles you can. The Riva and Egos satisfy even long-time, heavy smokers.

If you must have a PV that looks like a cigarette, read posts by Dormouse. She understands them and can guide you. It's not as weird and difficult as it seems. Charge your battery. Fill a cartomizer with juice. Screw it on the charged battery. Vape. Good luck. You CAN do this :)

Even if a kit you don't get along with gets you into the scene, and you upgrade after a month, the savings for that month still outweigh any other problems. Give it a shot, just go with a kit that has high reviews here. ^_^

Couldn't agree more! I went through a few models in the first few months trying to find what fit the best but bottom line they all kept me off of analogs/chew.

Definitely do some research and pick something with good reviews but don't be afraid to keep researching and switch things up a little if you find something that might meet your needs better.

AlanRK, I read this site for weeks before I even registered! And then I read some more. I would suggest following Boodle's advice, just dive right on in. I finally decided on the Riva from Liberty Flights (start with clicking the 20% off in the upper left-hand corner) as my first pv. I still use it in my daily rotation with Boge Low Resistant cartomizers, also available at LF. Get some eliquid (don't assume you will only like tobacco). I don't personally know about V4L although I believe there is high regard for them. Once you make your first decision, then sit back and read ECF to see what your next device will be. Not many people can resist trying another and then another.....

meanwhile, you will be smoking less or maybe not at all. Good luck! and be sure to report back. :)

The V4L is a model 808-D1 and the Riva / EGO are model 510, either are great starting points.
Good PVs, easy to get replacement parts, vape well, lots of options to try with extra cartos...... :)

Just look around the vendors on the front page of ECF for the best price, and don't forget

Do yourself a favor and get a 901. You won't regret it.

Same characteristics and performance as the 510 but with better flavor. Throat hit and specially vapor production are more closely related to the juice than the gear, to be honest.

Also, the 901 is compatible with all 808 equipment, including the awesome 808 XL batteries with 380 mAh. (highest charge capacity I have seen on a cigarette style PV)

Additionally, you can also upgrade easily to a cigar style (eGo/ECO) by getting 901 Riva batteries that will last you for days before a recharge.

A lot of box mods out there also use the 901 connections.

All in all, the most versatile and easily upgradable starter unit you'll ever see.

901's have very good flavor, a little cool on the temp of the vapor, compatible threads
to fit a 808-D1 carto, smaller batteries than I could stand myself (was a heavy smoker).
Everyone of us have their own favorite setup, atty, carto, juice flavor.... nice thing about
vaping is you can customize it to fit what you like.

Best of luck with it and ask if you have any problems, only stupid question is an UNASKED one.. :)
