Last night I was refilling a tank and accidentally spilled juice on my hands because.. well, I'm a newb and pushed the carto into the tank too fast. I washed my hands right afterwards. Nothing happened to me, but I am curious as to what harmful effects it has and why it's important to avoid skin contact with E-juice?

****Noting I vape 18mg and 24mg nic juices and do not make them myself.

It is possible particularly with high nic level to over nic from skin contact. Now high nic level is relative. I vape 0mg these days even a 6 mg juice can give me a contact buzz if I leave it on my skin too long.

The other worry is nic juice can be devastating to kids and pets. So if you spill it on your hands and YOU are fine. Then you forget about it and cuddle your animal. It gets on their fur and they lick it. It could make them very ill and with extreme high nic even be deadly.

Nicotine can absorb fairly easily through skin, but a spill like that will amount to tenths of a milliliter left behind (most of it drips off, leaving a thin sheen on you).

For most spills, the danger is minimal to zero, particularly at the concentrations we vape. The PG slows down the absorption and gives you plenty of time to remove it.

Even using the old (and almost certainly inaccurate) 100 mg limit, you'd have to rub more than 8 ml of 12 mg/ml liquid on you to risk dying. That's simply not going to happen on a standard spill, but if you should get large amounts on you, wash immediately. That'll take care of it.

Skin contact is of more concern when DIY folks are working with very high concentration nicotine liquids, like 100 mg/ml. For that reason, we always tell people to wear gloves when working with it just in case, and do the work next to a sink so you can wash immediately.

Half the time I lick minor one or two drop spillage off my finger. The taste? Kind of nasty. Side effects? None, I don't even notice.

The entire amount of e-liquid in my XL tank spilled on my hand. Lol.

Nicotine is a potentially toxic substance if enough of it is absorbed, whether through inhalation or via skin contact. At the concentrations we typically use to vape, if you wash it off your skin within a few minutes after skin exposure you don't have anything to worry about.

For the people who are DIY mixers at home and possibly using much higher concentrations of nicotine e-liquid, they should be using strict precautions to avoid skin contact; ie wearing rubber gloves while mixing.

I'm aware that DIY people need to worry more, but my concern is only with E-juice around 18-24mg of nic, already premixed, from Vendors.

I just don't want to have to be paranoid every time I'm filling my tank, that I am going to die or OD because I spilled the entire tank on my hand. ;)

I find I get a little light headed when mixing if I've mopped up spills without washing my hands immediately (76mg nic base when DIY'ing my liquid) Figure the nic has worked it's way into my system.

No ill effects other than feeling slightly "off".

You will be fine. If you do get any on your skin, a quick rinse should sort it.

My skin gets irritated by liquid though - DIY or otherwise. I have to wash my hands after filling my tanks. Once rubbed my eye without thinking. A mistake I'll not make again ha-ha.

If you get any on you just wash it off, the nicotine isn't going to kill you - honest. It might irritate your skin, and avoid the eyes...but just soap and water will sort that.

Nicotine can and will be absorbed through your skin though, so if you do notice any on you just wash it off, all is good :)

Was at BJ's Wholesale last Sunday. Don't know how I did it but my spaz self kicked it. I bent over to get one of those packs with a bunch of Kleenex boxes and my PV with Vivi Nova attached flipped out of my purse. I heard the crack of the tank breaking on the cement floor  I pick up the two pieces and as the liquid is getting all over me and my PV, I ask Mr. Robin for his handkerchief. Wipe stuff down as best I can and wrap the pieces of the nova in the hanky. Tuck it into my purse and continue shopping. Yeah, I was licking my fingers a lot. Never thought about washing it off.

Good thing I really liked that liquid ;)

For the record it was 70/30 8mg. The 3.5 Nova was probably more than half full. So I would estimate I had about 1ml of liquid on my hands. Never got nic sick. Oh, and the liquid got all over the shopping list too. Which I continued to handle.
