Please read. It is just another reminder to make sure you never give your social security number and date of birth over the phone.

Jury Duty Scam

Pass this on to your grown children. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud.
Check it out here: Federal Bureau of Investigation - Press Room - Headline Archives

Yep! It's true

Please make sure and pass this on!

Yea its really scary how people get away with that.

I had a phone call that was supposingly "collection" and they needed my bank account number but wanted it over the phone and wanted to know all my info, but I was a smart cookie and knew it was a scam because of the threats the guy would make at me if I didn't give out my info.

Money; the root of all evil.

I never have to do jury duty.. just go in talking about you rob someone cut off a hand and that the electric chair is too humane and we need a firing squad. and that if the cops picked them up they might not be guilty of that crime but if the cops suspected them then they are far from innocent..

The page that you linked is from 2006, so I thought it was old news. Hmm, this old fart got a surprise from a young SecAdmin, this thing is back and in different areas this time round. So if it missed you the first time, it might not this time, so be careful. One thing to remember is a legitimate company will never ask you for confidential information in an email or over the phone. Never in an email and they will certify themselves over the phone.

I just recently got the link, but hey even though it might be old news, doesn't mean those money hungry thieves out there wont be back at it again.

Such a touchy situation. I recently received a call from a college admissions rep and at one point during the conversation he asked my address. I got so flustered I just wanted hide under the bed and never fill out another form or talk to anyone I didn't know. If it didn't seem like you really should be giving out the information crooks would never make the money. Luckily, it really was an admissions rep that called me but if it really is legitimate they will always understand your need to verify.
