I am excited to have one of these on its way to me...
My only other mod is a Maxi Roughstack, so I have a bunch of protected Ultrafire 18650's around.
I know that the recommended batts for this are the IMR's, but I am wondering if it is an impossibility to use the batts that I already have?
The only thing you need to watch for is if any of your 18650s are much longer than 65-66mm long (including the button). Some brands like Trustfire and Ultrafire might be too long if they have a mAh rating over 2000 or so. Just be cautious when inserting the battery and don't force the door.

Your protected 18650's may be too long. Recommended is IMR flat tops no longer than 65mm. I had some protected batteries that were 68 mm and I couldn't get the VV Gripper battery door shut. The battery door is a weak link in this PV, so you definitely don't want to put undue pressure on it.
Thanks guys. I read this 49 page thread on the vv gripper last night and also did a bunch of reading about batteries. I ended up ordering a couple of flat top IMR's so that I put minimal stress on the door.
{edit} only one out of my four 18650's fit in the gripper, and after reading the stuff about batteries and having a close look at the one that fits I suspect that it is a counterfeit Ultrafire.
Have had mine for almost a year. My battery door broke and I now tape it shut. Needless to say it doesn't look the greatest but I still love it. Hits amazingly well. Love the built in ohms checker allows me to test my rebuilt coils with out a multimeter. Would definitely recommend this to any one contemplating a move to VV unit.
