OMG, if Disney starts debating Winston Churchill, I am going to pay attention to this thread with extra care! I could imagine some wonderful dialogues.
Snow White Witch: "If you were my husband, I'd poison your apple"
Churchill: "If you were my wife, I'd eat it."
Saying something is an oxymoron doesn't mean much, given that it's a name. I think you'd find oxymorons sprinkled rather liberally through names and definitions. "Bounty, the quicker picker upper" for example. Paper towels cannot actually PICK THINGS UP.
Calling a "fact" an oxymoron is quite different than calling a commonly known "name" an oxymoron, as it's a) already established b) so what? What exactly is wrong with it? It's not an oxymoron as it has a "set" of items that fall under that "name/category".
Also, I don't see how an electronic-cigarette is actually an oxymoron. The name arose during a time where those involved were seeking a name that would describe a set of items that were being used in the place of cigarettes, via the use of electronic methods that avoided combustion.
When Chantix first came out, my pdoc told me I'd be better off with those prescription "inhalers" that were too expensive for me to try, but I wanted to. He also told me that back in the 60s, the tobacco industry was realizing all their "smoking is safe" business was going to fail, and that they were looking at non combustible methods, including rudimentary versions of an "electronic cigarette" but that they also feared for their "addicted" base, and hence, continued the way of combustion. I bet they are sorry now.
But my point is, if cigarette MAKERS where considering non-combustion methods way back then, under what circumstances is it NECESSARY to so sharply differentiate between the two methods, and take issue with the word "electronic cigarette." That is what it IS by definition, and no matter how hard you TRY to make things "different" now, that ship has long sailed.
I like "E-cigarette." I still feel it is more user friendly to older smokers who may like the idea of switching to something "like" a cigarette. The kiddos and cloud chasers are more than able to fend for themselves. You'd be shocked (as I long time member, I think) to discover how little many people know about the term "vape" and it does still carry that added connotation to some folks.
My points 1) Oxymoron--- so what. You've never encountered one before?
2) The ship has sailed, I do not know a single active vaper who doesn't at least RECOGNIZE the term "e-cigarette" they are synonyms.
3) There are benefits to describing a product as similar to cigarettes for older cigarette users
4) Too little, too late.
5) The war being waged against
vaping/e-cigs isn't going to be won or lost by changing the forum name to "
vaping."
Finally, Winston Churchill: However beautiful the strategy....
you should occasionally look at the results.
- Winston Churchill
You have strategized for the term "vaper" but your results are spotty at best. Really, move on and go help a
vaping activism place more if you are so concerned.
