I have much better luck if I torch the Kanthal wire first, giving it an oxidation layer. When I wound my coils with raw Kanthal, the ohms were always inconsistent; BTW I always make microcoil winds, one wind against the next. If untorched, the ohms would sometimes read lower than what I knew that length of wire would actually be, due to shorting between the wraps. When torched well, I found that consistency was achieved every time. Try torching the wire two or three times before wrapping to see if that helps.

Sorry for the delay in response.

I'm using 28 gauge Kanthal. I did 12 wraps, then torched the coils while compressing them between pliers. I made 5 tonight. I made one at 1.0 ohm that I'm using on my mech, but yea, it's weird. The first two were both the same even with less wraps. Using the SVD to check ohms. I feel it's pretty accurate as I double checked it with a multimeter on my first two builds.

If my coil calculator is working correctly, a 9/8 wrap of 1/16" coils should give you 1.5 ohms. If you're getting 1.5 ohms with a 12 wrap coil, your wires are shorting in between the coils.

Try pre-oxidizing (torching) the wire first as bussdriver suggested.

And keep in mind that not all Kanthal is created equally. Minor variations in diameter and exact alloy composition can make a big difference in resistance, especially if you're talking about just a few inches of wire. Don't fixate so much on the number of coils that Joe Smith did to get "X" ohms, experiment a little to see what it takes for YOU to get "X" ohms, and keep in mind that it's possible you may have to vary things a bit when you get a new spool of Kanthal.

Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I did tonight. I built and tested 5 different coils. They're a breeze to make after the first one. I made one at 1 ohm that I'm happy with in my 18650 mech.

I should have written down how many wraps that was lol.

I torch them after they're coils so they stick closely together. Maybe I'll torch before I wrap AND after to make the coils stick together!

That's exactly how I do it. Torching before wrapping has two benefits. First, it anneals the metal, making it behave much more kindly during the wrapping process. Second, it oxidizes the surface, helping a lot to prevent shorting between the coils. Then, after wrapping, I compress ad torch again. This anneals it in the shape you want it to hold, relaxing the stress imparted by bending the wire around the bit (which results in work hardening - thus the springy behavior).

Ha, it's pretty simple really. I wrapped it around a 1/16 drill bit. Then squeezed them together by hand. Pulled off of the drill bit and compressed the coils with pliers and torched them. After torching the coil was tiny and wasn't coming undone :)

Here's a pic of the first coil I made. The resistance was too high so I scrapped it. But you'll get the idea. This coil fit perfectly centered inside a ProTank atomizer :)

not trying to de-rail this thread, but does torching the coil before wrapping get rid of funky tastes? I made my 2nd coil the other day and I used some fresh juice I just got and it tasted weird so I cleaned it and dryed it and used a diff juice and it still tastes weird/nasty, my first coil I did not torch either but the flavor on that one is fine
