Funky/weird/nasty taste could be a lot of things. Yes, an oil or grease coating on the wire might be the problem. Alternatively, it could be the wick, or something on or in the wick (like an oil of some sort) or the legs of the coil could be getting hot and burning/scorching the o-ring (if you're rebuilding a protank head). It could even be the juice (have you tried this juice in another device?).

I have had it in a different device in the past when I first ordered it and vaped it out of the mail, and I re-ordered it and now it's tasting very strange, and yeah I'm rebuilding protank heads (trying to anyways).

Check the rubber grommet that holds the bottom legs of the coil. If it's scorched, that could be your problem.

If not, check your wick for scorch marks.

If that's not it, be sure the wick is clean. If cotton, boil with distiller water, rinse, change water, and boil again before air drying, before making the wick.

Torch your wire before wrapping, then torch again while lightly compressing. Finally, dry burn it before installing your wick.

Also - you mentioned that you just re ordered the juice... Did you steep it before vaping? Alcohol or other carrier/extracting liquids in the flavoring could be at fault, even if your build is perfect. That's usually described as a perfumy or floral flavor, but sometimes as chemical.

Ha, it's pretty simple really. I wrapped it around a 1/16 drill bit. Then squeezed them together by hand. Pulled off of the drill bit and compressed the coils with pliers and torched them. After torching the coil was tiny and wasn't coming undone :)

Here's a pic of the first coil I made. The resistance was too high so I scrapped it. But you'll get the idea. This coil fit perfectly centered inside a ProTank atomizer :)

So, it IS okay to have the coil wraps touch one another? I am having issues with consistancy and this thread shed a ton of light on things for me! C'mon mail lady. I have a big spool of kanthal coming!!! I ordered a tiny amount and ran out already by experimenting. lol... If someone can confirm that the wraps can in fact be touching- I would appreciate it!? :)if not, then back to the beginning...

Yes, micro and nano-micro coils though it appears they shouldn't work they do, and very very well. They also provide more consistency from coil to coil compared to a standard or less compacted coil. A Micro and Nano should when dry fired glow evenly from center outward, giving even surface temperature across the wick being heated as well as more surface area is covered giving more flavor and a better vape. They take a bit more time to get coiled, but when a Kanger head is recoiled this way and everything is snug and pulled tight before threading in a wick they give almost double the performance than a stock head, a 2.2ohm micro Kanger head performs as good if not better than a Kanger stock 1.5ohm head.

So a 1/16 drill bit will work? ok so i have some silica how do i get that inside the coil? or do i put the silica and kanthal on the drill bit? are the coils supposed to be snug on the wick or can they be loose and if loose how loose. they look tight to me and i just could not get them to look tight when i tried. i need to work on this some more.

OMG, IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!! Not worrying about the space between each wrap simplified the process!!! :) im a happy vaper! Thanks so much to everyone who posted on this thread, it healped a GREAT DEAL!!!

Now everytime I fire my ProTank 1ohm coil I made to use on my mech, I'm getting gurgles and juice shooting in my mouth. What could that be? I have cotton inside the coil and 2 pieces on top of the coil

My best guess: Your coil is taking a bit longer to heat up than a higher gauge wire with fewer wraps might (my microcoils with 28g behave like this). Meanwhile, you're puffing on it before it's fully heated up. So you are drawing juice to your wick before the coil is able to vaporize it. My advice: hit the button a second or 2 before you start to draw. Give your device that short spurt to get the coil heated up so when you puff on it the juice actually vaporizes while new juice is being pulled in. If this does not work, maybe you have too much wicking for your coil. Remove some of the top wick.
