Lip crust??? Oh you mean flavor crystals. 
I keep a cup of soapy water by my sink and when I see my drip tip getting dirty I drop it in and get a clean one..every couple days I just have to give them a good rinsing and they shiny and clean!
I wash the drip tip on my Atlantis twice a day, yet there are still times during the day when it's "crusty". I could wash it more, but I'm not going to spend my life trying to keep it clean.
Aaaaaannnnnnnddddddd...that's why we don't share drip tips

I use my thumb nail to clean when I notice anything. Maybe I'm just not so concerned as I'm the only one who uses it... and I'm in college... I would puff puff pass in the past and share drinks which are imo considerably more unhygienic.
You should ask your friend how often he washes his silverware.

True vape story: I was out one night having a few drinks with a friend vaping at the bar, and I started talking to this really good looking girl at the bar about it. She was asking a lot of the typical questions does it work to quit smoking, how much do they cost, etc.. Inevitably she asked to try it, to which I obliged.
Later that night when I got home I happened to glance at my drip tip complete with at the bar flavor crystals. Whoopsie.
