Hi Everyone,

I recently bought the Kanger topbox Mini kit. The SS coil burnt out after 3 days of on and off vaping. I was vaping at 20-25w.

I thought I would try the 0.15 Ni 200 coil (TC). It says on the side of the coil 15-45w. But does this mean I can use TC with this coil and if so, at what temperature? I am rather confused as there are no instructions or recommendations for coil usage with the kit. What would you recommend setting the temp/wattage at?

The kit also came with a 0.5 Clapton coil. Do you use this one on wattage only? It says 18-70 watts on the side of it.

Thank you for any help.

Hi! :)

Unfortunately, Kanger coils are not the best, and it's not unusual for one to only last a few days before becoming unpleasant to use.

The Ni200 one should only be used in Ni TC mode. I'm guessing that the wattage range printed on the side is for devices that allow you to adjust the initial wattage used in Ni TC mode. Kanger mods don't have that capability.

The 0.5 ohm Clapton, (imo the best coil Kanger makes), is made of kanthal wire, so it should only be used in power, (wattage), mode.

Nickel and Titanium shoykd be used only in TC.

SS can be used in both TC and power mode.

Kanthal, Nichrome, and others shoykd be used in power mode

The only thing I have to add is that I personally disagree with what has been said about the longevity of the Kanger coils. I find them-- especially the more recent versions-- to last just as long, if not longer, than other stock coil heads of comparable price and function. It is fair to say that you may not be able to hit them as hard as some other brands/designs, but if you treat them well and don't take 8 crazy hot pulls in 30 seconds, there is no reason they shouldn't last for a solid amount of time. I just changed the .5ohm clapton in my Subtank nano after my partner and I shared it for about four weeks of fairly consistent use. We ran somewhere in between 100-120mL of juice through it, which is completely respectable if not quite impressive.

However long Kanger coils might last, they don't wick well enough. The juice flow holes are too small, too few, and don't sit low enough in the tank. I've had more "undeserved" dry hits from their coils than any other brand, by far, at power settings well within the coils' advertised range. I much prefer Triton coils, Vaporesso ccell coils, and even the cheaper Eleaf EC coils, and tanks that can use all 3 of these, and other coils as well, e.g. Herakles, Melo I-III, Vaporesso Gemini, iJust2, Aspire Atlantis, etc. They also happen to not leak like the Kanger tanks. ;)

Ymmv.

*Shrugs,* I don't know what to tell you. If you don't try and force syrup through them, it is plenty possible to take them up pretty high without a dry hit. I can count the dry hits I've had in my Subtanks, at my own fault, on one hand... but I also have no qualms with 70/30 VG/PG or thinner. The holes on the more recent version of Subtank/Toptank/OCC heads are not small. YMMV.

Thank you very much for the info, 7sixtwo.

Is there a max temp I shouldn't go past with the Ni? I have it so I might as well educate myself and what it is like.

I will try the Clapton next for sure.

What is the difference between coil materials? Is it a flavor vs. clouds thing?

Just don't explore the very top of the temperature ranges and you should be fine. I used to prefer the Ni coils at ~480F-500F, but you can get a good, cool vape off em at lower temps as well. Just start at about ~420F and adjust to your taste. :)

Beyond the fact that some coil metals are used exclusively for TC, (Ni, Ti), one in power mode only, (kanthal), and one can be used in either, (SS); the difference between coil types is pretty much as you said; flavor vs. clouds. Generally the higher the temp/wattage, the greater the vapor volume and this lessens the flavor a bit.

I've recently, (like yesterday recently), been playing around with my first RDA, (Twisted Messes V2 clone), and I might become a dripper, at least whenever I'm home, (tanks for the road). Sure it's a little inconvenient not having a tank but you get flavor and clouds.. or whatever, you just build to suit your taste. I've got dual claptons in there at .3 ohm and it's kind of fantastic. It wasn't even hard to build. I see an Aromamizer V2 in my near future. But I digress.. :D

I definitely see the difference between the SS and the Ni. The SS had much better flavor and the Ni has much bigger clouds with a little less flavor. Now, I can't wait to try the Clapton.

Congrats on the RDA. I work from home so I can see myself going that way in the near future. I have a couple B&Ms near me so I am sure they can get me going when I am ready.

I Vapes on the original Subtank Nano and i had massive problems with the original occ coil heads. I had problems with cotton being crammed in the coil so tightly it couldn't wick properly

a fella from kanger tech brought in the protank 4 the flavor was considerable better than the clt 4.0 and subtank not sure on the coils though
