So I'm fairly new to the whole rebuilding scenery and recently got an RDA, but anywhoo.. I've been trying to rebuild the Kanger OCC coil and for the life of me, no matter how many YouTube videos ive watched and hands on, I'm still doing something wrong. Basically how I've rebuild it is I do a 5 wrap on 28g kenthal(tried 24 aswell), pull the pin and rubber gasket out, insert the coil in from the top, put the rubber gasket over one of the wires and the other one outside.. And you get the jist of the rest. Then I cut a piece of cotton, I use cellucotton, roll it up a bit and put it threw the coil shell and the coil itself. Sounds good so far right? Well when I screw it on to kbox mini tank and fire it up, I get vapor, but all I can taste is the cotton, no flavor. This last one I pulled apart to look at, the cotton had a slight burn mark on it. I thought maybe I was putting too much cotton in at first, and maybe I am, I don't really know, but I don't think I am! It slides in easy, not too easy though and doesn't mess the coil itself up. I'm priming it and letting it sit a bit before firing it up. I believe it is just a priming issue but not sure. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm getting pretty discouraged. Can't really afford to buy coils left and right like I have been when it's 25$ for 5 at my local shop. Even though I have an rda now, I still prefer the sub tank, especially when I'm going out.

Hopefully the links to the pics I posted show up, not sure if I did it right.

When I have rebuilt the OCC's I noticed the new cotton has a "breaking in" period of 5 or 6 hits, then it tastes normal. I prime the wick with 4 drops down the chimney and one drop on each side where the weep holes are, then let it sit for a few minutes. The first draw is one without power covering the air holes.

I rebuild my OCC with cotton. Rayon doesn't swell like regular cotton so you would need to twist it and make it more dense. That said.... If you are getting burn marks, then that part of your wick is dry. Unless you are throwing an ungodly amount of power to that new coil.

I drip 3 drops on the top of the new coil and then wet both cotton areas at the juice holes. As, Sir2 said above, the vape will taste a little off for the first few hits until the liquid is flowing towards the heat.

Whenever I put a new coil on I lower it to around 11-13 watts until it gets going then go back up to my 20-25watt range after I know it's wicked good. It's a .5 ohm coil im rebuilding and I'm dry firing it on my RDA to check for hot spots. This last one I built came out to .43 ohms on my ohm reader. I'm going to try putting new cotton in and re wicking. If nothing has changed I'll try again with regular organic cotton or some cotton strips from my local vape shop. Thanks for the input so far guys

You really shouldn't dry fire the OCC's as the leads will burn through the rubber tip, melt and cause a short. You can't really test them for hot spots. With you flavor issue, it does sound like a wicking issue. Either you have it packed too tight with cotton so juice can't get onto the coil, or you're not giving it ample time to wick properly. I noticed with the stock OCC I pulled apart, there isn't that much cotton to begin with, and what was in there were just the outter pieces of the Japanese organic cotton, no fluffy bits at all. So this may be your issue. Good luck bruh.
