My first .5 OCC coil only lasted 3 days . I put my device up to 25 watts and it totally fried it. A terrible burnt hit. I backed it back down to 20 watts and it was fine for a little while, but then another bad burnt hit. Down to 15 watts and I literally sucked hot particles in my mouth when taking a hit. ...? The cotton and/or coils are literally breaking apart? That's totally gross and I can only imagine, not that safe.

My second .5 OCC, I never put my device above 17 watts, keeping it at 15 watts for the most part. Within 4 days, same thing ... total burnt hit one day, sucking up hot particles the next?

What's going on? I thought I was supposed to be able to hit a .5 coil up to 30 watts ... Is sucking up hot particles from the coil normal? Should I just keep it at 12 to 15 watts and that's it, taking 1 to 2 second drags and that's it? Is it just a string of bad coils?

Thanks

EDIT: Thought I should mention that the juice I used for both coils was 50/50 watermelon. I hear it's better to use higher VG liquids with sub ohm tanks. But can that be part of the reason why the coils are being fried so quickly?

Only used my 1.2 ohm coil for one full tank then ripped it apart to rebuild it with rayon, didnt have any issues with it but was only vaping it around 15 watts. I did notice that the rubber insulator was red and in rip trippers rebuild video his was white, I wonder if they had an issue and changed them at some point? I just got the tank Monday.

Got two subtank the 25mm ones and though the coils didn't last long compared to what some were saying I had zero problems and I am a very heavy vaper (can drain an istick 50 in 13 hours) looking at the coils I can't really see what there is to break apart never had that happen with any cotton ive used. Are you vaping high VG juice? as that would explain it.

kdub, Do you hit it at 25 right away, or do you work up to 25? Especially with a new coil, I'll start around 12 and nudge my way up after a few hits. Once "seasoned", I'm ok hitting relatively hard. Although, I still don't run my 0.5 heads much above 20. I vape relatively sweet juices, and they don't like the super high heat (but that's just me)

    Thanks for the info everyone.

I would say that you either got some bad coils, you are chain vaping which doesn't allow enough wicking time, or your draw is too hard.
I wouldn't put it past Kanger to have some bad coils, I have had plenty of bad protank coils ... I usually take about three or four pulls then put it down. Pick it up again anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes later. Follow that cycle for about 10-15 minutes then usually put it down for a while (hour or more). Too much? Also, I definitely pulled hard a couple of times I got burnt hits, so I will try slowing that down. Thanks for the tip.

kdub, Do you hit it at 25 right away, or do you work up to 25?
The first coil, I did start at 20, then quickly went to 25. The second one I stayed at 15 for a little while and then put it 17.

The hot particles is hot juice, my nano does the same thing my coils last quite a long time but i rarely use it anymore since i got a Melo
I thought about that, but when I dissassembled the coil, I noticed that there was A LOT of black gunk on the coil itself and the wick was all black. So I believe that's what I was sucking up. But I could be wrong.

Right now I have some tasty grape 70/30, with the watts at 12.5 and vaping perfectly, so I don't know that I want tempt anything by going up. Maybe a drag here and there. But I'll keep my fingers crossed this lasts longer thand three or four days.

You could have a bad batch... tough to say. My last coil lasted for two weeks at 20 watts from start to finish. That being said, I use multiple devices every day, so actually usage is tough to determine. What I can say for sure, is that there aren't any particles inside the thing to break apart. it's a kanthal coil and a cotton wick, and that's it. Maybe spitback?

I've had really good results with these.

Make sure you wet the wick by dropping it down the center until saturated before you put it together.

Make sure you don't let the juice level get to low in the tank. You can see the holes on the inside of the coil, and juice level will drop below that.

If you pull to hard you could probably pull in specs of juice, hasn't happened here yet.

Wait 5 seconds between hits, take a puff or two before hand every now and then without firing the device. It's how I do it and I've vaped 30 watts no issues. I do vape 25 watts all day most of the time. I normally give it a pull, fire it and hit it long and slow into lungs, exhale wait 5 seconds and you will see a bubble flow up through the tank within that time to let you know the wick has been wet. And I hit it like that about 3 or 4 times and set it down for 5 or 10 minutes or however long.

Sorry your having issues but.mine and others I know with the subtank arent. So there is a solution out there. It could be a set of bad coils. Not impossible, way back in my Protank 2 days I had 2 bad coils in a pack. One that didn't read at all and one that burnt up for who knows what reason.

Good luck and hope it works out for ya!

I truly hate the OCC coils for the subtank. If I use the subtank (I have a mini) I only use the RBA section. The Atlantis and Delta II are far better tanks which I switch off depending on the juice I use.

I really don't see how you could hate the OCC coils and the subtank, unless you are using too much wattage...I use the OCC coils and the RBA and have had great luck with both...

The OCC's have better flavor and more vapor than the Atlantis.

The flavor part I can agree with if you're comparing the old style Atlantis coils. If you're using Melo coils, the flavor is better, if not better, in the Atlantis. The Atlantis produces much more vapor and can handle more watts. But this is just an opinion of mine. It's all subjective :)

I run the Subtank at 23 watts. After using the RBA in the Delta II, it kind of made me shelve the subtank. The RBA in the Delta II is far superior.

A friend has the delta 2 and it's a good tank but like most I'm a lower wattage vaper and out of them all for the watts I like vaping at 25 Max the subtank is the best of the lot very forgiving on wicking with the rba section and more then enough airflow but even that is getting improved with the new version coming soon. I have found the setups I need to get the satisfaction enough to stay well clear of the analogs barring something breaking beyond repair my days of buying vape stuff are over for a while although can never say never ;). Sigelei 50, istick50, two lemos, two subtanks and one or two subtank+ vape nirvana for me :).
