I got kinda a dumb question here maybe, but can Kanthal wire rust? I've been using RBA's for a wile now and have recently gotten into ss cable and ekowool and xs-116 silica and all that fun stuff.

Anyway, I have a RSST with a silver plated post in it. I had a 3/32nd size ss cable in it and some silica nextel sleeve around the top with a 3 wrap of 28g kanthal. I went through about 3-4 tanks of masterminds DJ's Locker juice before I ran out. I wanted to change juice flavors, so I went to clean it a bit before throwing new juice in it.

I rinsed the top deck, the silica sleeve, the cap, and the inside of the tank by putting water in and out threw the fill hole with a needle. Then I did some dry burns to clean off any juice buildup around the coils and make the silica look clean again. Once I was done, I noticed this rust like color on the silica where the coil sits... it also looks to be where the coil attaches to the post. the deck and coil only had water on it for like 3-5mins. I'm kinda confused here.

Take a look at this picture and tell me what you think.

Just a guess here, but I'm thinking that may not be true 316 stainless steel. If I am right, I'd stop vaping that thing right away. Take it out and see how it reacts with a magnet. If the magnet pulls it at all, I would not use it. Again, just a guess.

The magnet trick isn't very usefull since not all stainless steel is non-magnetic. The RSST is non-magnetic if that's what your asking. The SS cable is however magnetic, but I've been buying it for a wile now and know where to get the right stuff... the stuff I buy in bulk is 316 stainless cable that is used for spear guns and spearfishing. It will not corrode, even in salt water. I have never had a cable rust on me, and I am always sure to never get galvanized cable.

The cable used in the picture is actually from a online vape shop... kidney puncher, they know their s*&t.

Wait a minute - see this thread - Kanthal is an alloy and has iron - so will be attracted to a magnet.....

I'm pretty sure he was asking if my cable wick or atomizer was real stainless steel.... I know neither of throws will rust, which is why I was asking about the kanthal. I've washed and dry burned a lot and never had that issue. I get my kanthal from where most people do TemCo (think that's the name)

Not sure if you are using the stock washer from the RSST but on both of mine the stock washers are not SS, they're just regular zinc plated steel washers. They have never rusted on me but I swapped them out for SS316 washers. The stock screws are SS though.

I've had a similar color from dry burning coils after a few times. Happens when they get really gunked up. It wipes off but when it gets to that point I just replace it.

Yea, it turned out all the screws where fine. It was the top washer that started rusting on me. Kinda weird how it threw the rust onto my coils and silica (unless that was just similar colored juice buildup). I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it up. Gonna replace the top washer.... I got a bunch of small washers, not sure if any of them are stainless though.
