After more reading I'm starting to wonder if another error on my part is the wick rolling... as every wick I've made, I've rolled as tightly as I could while using an 18ga needle to keep the center part open. Ideally I should just roll it loosely until it fits in the wick channel?

Blu, hope yours arrives today! It's such a sexy looking device and puts everything else I own or have owned to shame. Just wish I could use it! LOL

I roll mine tightly around a needle sometimes, other times I roll it by hand and then put a pointed long pin (sharpened thick un-bent paperclip, lol) through the center to open the middle up but I always have the pin in the center while wrapping the coil, it just makes life easier :)

it is most definitely user error :) you'll get it the wire cant be to tight around the wick and cant be to loose. You should be able to saturate the wick and not see the coils start to light up until atleast 10 seconds maybe more. The wick is the most important part. Also you want to make sure the wick isnt touching the post inside the tank that'll cause a short aswell.

Loft, I feel your pain, I was having the same wicking issue until last night... I made a new wick with 400 at about 14mm or 1/2" and folded in the outer edge. This is working great now, but the katana is different than the other genesis I have (orion, line) the wick hole is smaller, the positive post is closer, this makes wicking the katana a different task, you need to ignore any advice based on other mods and keep at it.

Yeah...might want to ignore the post from the guy that started this thread and has used nothing but genisis attys for a year now.....:)

Yup, and all of the advice I have been giving on this thread and related PMs are specifically for the Katana. I have many other Genisis mods and they are all working well for me so I have insight into the general workings of the Genisis atomizer in it's various forms but everything I post in this thread is specific to the Katana and its particular setup.

UA72Riddle has no idea what he's talking about either... (just kidding of course, UA72Riddle is very knowledgeable with Genisis setup including the Katana :) )

It's really not that different. I have ALOT of Genisis mods and the concept is the same except when you start talking about tank over coil (G-Tank, G-Tank US, GLV, etc.) vs tank under coil (Katana, Zenesis, Hybrid Mini, Orion, etc.). They are very different and require different wick methods.

The correct setup is to have the wick oxidized properly, the wick straight as possible and lightly snug in the wick hole, to have the coils wound snug but not choking the mesh and to keep the amount of kanthal wire in open air to an absolute minimum without having the wick touching the bottom of the tank if it is metal or any of the electrodes.

Once all the basics have been satisfied you should test for and correct any shorting between the mesh and the coil. This is easily identifiable though. If any part of the coil starts to glow immediately when you hit the button there is a short. If any part of the coil glows faster than the other parts of the coil and there is juice on the wick then you have a slight short. Move the wick slightly by turning it or take a small flat screwdriver or small plastic stick with a flat end and gently move the coil that is shorting up or down very slightly.

Test again and repeat until the coil heats up evenly.

Once that is done then test vape. it will be a little bit hars for the first 10 - 20 hits. This is normal unless you also did the "Turn and burn" technique to quickly break in the new wick (for the sake of keeping this to the basics I won't go over that here). Within 24 hours, the coil and mesh will even out and you will have great vapor and amazing taste for at least a month and often 3-4 months without having to do anything but wipe the vapor chamber of condensation every now and then and fill with juice.

Also, because I want to be absolutely clear, I am not picking on you chef josh and I apologize if it seems that way. I am just clearing up any possible misconceptions.

The Genisis is not as complicated a creature as some think it to be and once anyone having trouble with one figures it out, they will have a reliable and enjoyable device that will give them many years of vaping pleasure without having to empty their pockets on consumables like wick and wire (atomizers/cartomizers). I try to limit the amount of time the average person has to take to figuring it out so that there will be more happy Genisis users everywhere by passing along the things I have learned in my quest for the ultimate vape as a service to the community. My small way of giving back some of what I've learned from others here on ECF and other forums :)

He said he is taking a break after the 3rd batch. He also said he has another mod on the drawing board. The Fluid Druid I beleive.I do not know if that will be his next project or if he will make another run of the Katanas
Loft, don't give up just yet. I believe practice makes perfect and sooner or later you'll get it right. And some more Poc might not be making any more katana. :)

Okay, so a little update. I was getting impatient with the way my wick was going, and how good it was (not) wicking. It seemed I had the flavor down pretty good, but the vapor wasn't what I thought it should be. So, I made another wick, a little bit thinner 15mm, with the outer edge folded inward. Then, left a little bit extra on top, not too close to hit the cap though. Then, instead of wrapping 4 coils (4 on one side 3 on the other), I wrapped 5 coils (5 on one side 4 on the other).(Thanks to Riddle for the suggestion). From the beginning, after adjusting shorts, and then "breaking in the wick" by holding upside down and firing.......it went right into tasting pretty good, and putting out some descent clouds of vapor (pretty sure was more than my 3-4 coil setup). I'm just wondering if this will increase in vapor, as my 3-4 coil did (as I break in the wick more)............ I was under the impression that adding more coils/wraps would make for a cooler vape, does this mean less vapor too, or the same? Maybe I just wrapped this one better.....and might re-visit the 3-4 coil setup later. It is a slightly cooler, more tasty vape now with the 4-5 coil setup....just wondering if I'm gonna have less vapor. Anyone else with experience with this?

Thanks
