Don't know why but I was thinking about something today that some of y'all might get a kick out of so I thought I'd share. So story time. Feel free to skip to the end. My dad was pastor of a little middle of nowhere church in the late 80's. A girl at that church and I spent lot's of time together and I always had a crush on her, but I was clueless about women and she was older than me so I never said nothing.
She graduated, I started dating other girls, eventually married wife #1. 5 years and two kids later #1 wants out. She starts seeing someone and her sis tells me I should to. Shoot I didn't even know where to start if I wanted to. But by pure chance I run into Church Girl one night while getting gas, we get to talking. She and her hubby have been separated for months, they (or mostly she) tried to do the weekend away thing to see if they could salvage it a few weeks back, but even after that he isn't interested in trying.
I hatch a devious plan, if I show up with a girl that #1 knows at the bar where #1 frequently goes with her new man, I'll make her jealous. Not the best reason to ask someone out, but I asked Church Girl if she'd like to have dinner sometime, we could catch up, talk about our failing marriages, go have a drink afterward, she said yes.
She was gonna meet me at the restaurant. Sis-in-law (#1's sis) is watching my kids by the way. So I get there, and wait, and wait, and wait. I'm finally about to give up thinking I've been stood up when she finally shows up, her two little girls in tow. Babysitter cancelled last minute. She couldn't find anyone else. So there goes my bar plans, but being a gentleman I still buy dinner for her and the girls. And we talk, and we talk, and eventually she tells me that the 'weekend away' had unplanned results. Turns out Church Girl is pregnant, and now she and Mr Idjet are gonna try again to work things out.
Seems like my whole plan had failed miserably, huh? Funny thing, the story doesn't end there. Starting when he was about 3 months old I was there to watch that baby learn to walk and talk, to feed him, to change his diapers, and I had the joy of having him call me daddy long before Mr Idjet ever heard it. And when he was about 1.5, he walked down the aisle with his new big brother as a ring bearer in our wedding.
Strange how life goes sometimes.
