From what I understand a "kick" is a regulating device, looks like a computer chip, that fits between the battery and the top of the mod. It regulates the voltage or wattage.

That's exactly what it is, it also can have a low voltage cutoff so you don't over draw your battery.

Simple answer: Kick is a chip that goes between your battery and atomizer to turn a mech mod into a VW mod.

Long answer: It allows variable wattage via a potentiometer mounted on the top half of the PCB assembly. It requires an additional tube extension, unless your mod telescopes. It MUST be placed between the atomizer and battery, otherwise you'd fry your kick chip. As mentioned, it has a voltage and resistance cut off; it wont fire below a certain resistance (depending on the chip) and wont fire once the battery drains below a certain voltage. The wattage range depend on the kick chip, some are 5-12, others are 6-15.

In the event of a hard short, I think it acts as a fuse aswell. Personally, any time I run a tank on my mechs I use a kick.

Every mech I ever used, with the exception of the Reo I used a kick. Including the Smoktech Magnito. It's been explained here perfectly exactly what it is and how it's used. But it's not neccerary, personal preference. But my suggestion would be, if you purchase the Magnito, you will enjoy it much more with a kick. Try it both ways, see what suits you. It's about a $45.00 investment, but IMO well worth it! :)

Just to add to what has already been said...

The Kick sits on top of the battery in the battery chamber of the mechanical mod. It takes up some room, so some mods won't be able to fit both an 18650 and a Kick in the battery chamber. Many mod manufacturers have an optional Kick sleeve extender or cap extender to allow the use of both. Like the AltSmoke Silver Bullet, above.

Without an extender sleeve or extender cap, you'll have to drop down a battery size from an 18650 to an 18490/18500 battery.

You will need an IMR high drain battery to use the Kick, which you should already use anyway. (Not an ICR Li-ion battery)

The Kick offers the same protective circuitry as a regulated VV/VW mod against short circuits and over-discharge of the battery. It does NOT have protection against reverse polarity - this is putting a battery in backwards; doing so with a Kick will fry it beyond repair.
