roku vs kodi
i bought a roku a year or two ago. i used netflix and for a while, hulu. the rest available on roku was random crap, imho.
i then bought Playon. this is a server app that talks to roku, and lets you connect to various websites via user-submitted plugins. i could get 1channel and several other sites that offered "good stuff"
but then Playon stopped working on my PC. their support is hopeless.
then. i bought a kodi box out of frustration, and it was the best purchase i've made in a long time.
i rarely use my roku, except for maybe netflix.
i no longer see why anyone would choose roku over kodi, unless they are committed to paying monthly for sources for some strange reason.
tl;dr: kodi is miles better than roku
I need to start making a list of these Kodi add-ons, as they get mentioned here.
I'm new to Kodi, know hardly anything about Roku, SS, Shield, or anything else of that ilk... just don't watch TV much and don't play games either... well, on a computer anyway
We have only one TV in the house, a little 24" flat panel hanging on the wall in the kitchen, with a FireTV stick bought on sale for $20.
I DL'd Kodi 16.x to my main laptop about a month ago, added Exodus, played with it for a few days, watched a few episodes of Barnwood Builders on DIY channel and some 'My Name is Earl', and haven't messed with it much since. Over the next few days/weeks though I plan to upgrade to v17, install a good skin, and spend more time with it.
I just need to go back and skim this thread and make notes this time around.
I've also done a little research on Plex too, thanks to @kiba !
Thanks everyone for your input!
and added No Limits following the vid below
Mongo, thanks for the suggestions. I upgraded Kodi to v17, and added No Limits following the vid below. Is the Echo Wizard a good add-on too, or should I have found another way to add No Limits alone? TIA

ETA:For anyone who doesn't want to turn your Kodi install UPSIDE DOWN, don't install the above, as I did. I thought it was just a skin and some add-ons... didn't know it was going to change EVERYTHING!
Looks painful to me!![]()
Due to RL, I've yet to load/test Kodi 17. But I've read/viewed 'nuff stuff to know I'll be building my own custom 17 setup on da laptop and den copy to Fire TV Sticks.
Da countless repos I've seen are so cluttered wid countless/worthless add-ons/whistles/bells!
BTW, check out adbLink and adbFire on YouTube fer Kodi build backups/restores. May prevent forehead/wall damage...
Not if you're da malebox (sic)...
I don't have a clue what you guys boxes are like
Over the last year I upgraded my network to comfortably support streaming to anything I want.
Vultures, the whole lot of them.
tbh I hate it too, its ok on my htpc but less remote-friendly than confluence. but it does add some better functionality, options and more configurable, if that's a word. so I'm trying to get used to it.I hated the new 17 skin. Went back to confluence. And I don't do builds either. Usually more of a PITA to figure out where everything is.
this is pretty much exactly how i'm set up, and also what I always recommend to friends who want to do this... only big difference is I have a separate router/network with openvpn for all the streaming, i'm using shield tv boxes, and I also have ps vue.OK, jumping in late on the thread, only because I didnt know it existed. I cut the cord long ago, got sick and tired of the annual cable haggling. Vultures, the whole lot of them.

Couldnt be happier!!
- Bought my own cable modem - Motorola MB7420
- New Router - Netgear R7800
- 3 Android TV boxes with Kodi, Netflix, HBONow, etc loaded. All 3 boxes in the $50 - $75 range, latest is a T96pro.
- Backlit airmouse
- Using TRAKT and REALDEBRID on Kodi (Exodus primarily)
- Using NEWSLeecher to suck stuff down off the UseNet
- Running PLEX as a home media server to serve my movie collection
- And a digital TV antenna for local news.
ETA: And an OBI box to handle telephone
My only problem, and it is no big deal, is that my Harmony Remote doesnt handle the Android TV Box Power On/Off toggle reliably.
