I have kind of a weird problem with using an antenna for local stations. I live in Tennessee, and all my local channels are from Nashville (via cable). But, I actually live closer to Huntsville, Ala., and those TV stations come in strongest here via antenna. I have no interest in those stations at all. I'm thinking I'm going to have to come up with an outside antenna to get the Nashville stations, and I don't really want to fool with that.

So, I'm sort of stuck.

I'm at somewhat of an advantage here in FL, it's very flat and all the stations I want are within a few miles of my house. I've been reading about installing an outdoor antenna in the attic which is what I'm going to do with the Sky. Saves the hassle of dealing with mounting and grounding it.

@2legsshrt - I brought your 2 stranded posts about Skystream from the sandbox to the thread.

When I looked at Skytream dot com and your recommendation to get it from Elitemodfl dot com (note, need the fl at the end of their name) actually Skystream is $.01 cheaper.

Also the $150 package from either place doesn't have an airmouse. It's $170 for an airmouse w/keyboard.

But it sure sounds like your getting decent support by getting if from Elitemodfl dot com.
The reason I say get it from Elitemods.com is supposedly their support line is easier to get through on. Skystream owns the name and sells the boxes and has just as good of support but might be a little slower getting back to you. I bought mine there and have never had to call them since the FB page someone always answers the question. Elite mods is a couple miles down the road and does the programming and setting up the box. Either place is a good one to buy from and you can get a 2 year warranty for around $12 I don't remember for sure. I took it cause they will replace it if it fails. If you buy it on Amazon and want the 2 year warranty you get the warranty from the same phoney outfit that insures my phone. So don't get one from Amazon. Also before you buy check out the FB group, you have to join and they will OK you its a closed group. Ask some questions. The people there except for a couple of the Techs from Elite don't work for SS and if you get someone to buy one you get a buck or something towards buying something else from them. But go there talk to the owners and see what they think. Manny is the main Tech that does the setting up the box and the updates, Sven doesn't work for them but has owned one since they first came out 3 or so years agp. The name of the group is Myskystreamx on FB. There is one other tech there also but Manny will usually answer any questions you have within 30 min. I have never regretted getting the SS1 and the air mouse. I've had it for 4 months and the only problem I have had is when Exodus got hacked and all you could get was Minions. I just went to Specto. And when my internet went down. I also swear by Real Debrid and my speed increase to 40Mbps. If I go to a stream a RD and if it doesn't load up withing 10 sec. I stop it properly and go to the next one if that stream is unavailable it automatically goes to the next.

Some people prefer the Logitech K400 over the air mouse but I use the keyboard so little the air mouse is perfect for me. I make all my lists up on Trakt.tv and authorize it on the addons that will let you. Also there are several videos on the SS1 on the Skystream channel on YouTube.

Even with this box Ginny has problems remembering the correct things to do to get to what you want to watch. A couple of things that are important to do with any Kodi box is always close Kodi down properly, clear your Kodi cache once a month or so more often if you do a lot of pausing ff or rw, and reboot your box, reboot your modem once a month.

Another thing I have noticed is if you pause a stream for very long like 15min+ a lot of times my stream will lock up after a few minutes after restarting, I bring up the buttons on the bottom of the screen, on mine hit the OK key, hit stop which should take you back to the stream you were using and restart it, it should give you the option of Resume or Start from beginning, just hit resume and for me I'm good to go.

Evening folks. First, let me say this thread is a great idea. I just stepped in and have a lot of catching up to do, especially since some of the material isn't light ... often gotta go do research on the hardware/software discussed before proceeding.

But, while I'm catching up I'd like to mention NNTP, newsgroups. Now, I'll go back where I left off and see if it's already been discussed. BTW, I have several streaming media players on hand. Although to date I've pretty much disregarded the streaming part and used them primarily as media players for files I've obtained from the newsgroups and recorded from the TV card in my computer.

I'm somewhat puzzled by the expression "cutting the cord" when the solutions require retention of broadband internet, i.e. cable. I'ma back to catching up now so I can discover that everything I've said was already discussed, LOL.

@oldbroad, did I read somewhere on here that you sent your indoor antenna back? If so, what was the problem with it?

There was no problem with it, i just live in a mobile home that faces S/E and i need to face N/W to get good reception and the thing is too big for the mobile home walls to hang on and besides it wouldn't face N/W very much, more like just N., so I gave up on it ( it's not a directional antennae either)

Cutting the cord refers to tv. I'm afraid we're stuck wit da net! :)
But there is no longer any need to download anything. Virtually everything that has ever been broadcast for the last 9000 years or so is available to stream. Free. Not to mention legal. (yes, gray area but still legal at this point in time)

The FDA will find a way to screw it up too.

For years I've had a growing hatred for paying for 150+ channels when I only watch maybe a dozen, while not getting some I'd really like to have but which are unavailable without paying even MORE. I'm an obsessive compulsive archivist though, referring primarily to 'as it happens' news coverage of important (to me) events.
That kind of stuff will never be provided by any means other than capturing it as it happens.

I've got gawd knows how many days, or months, on VHS, DVD, Digital capture, audio tape ... arggg. Did I mention the OCD part? I'm in a long term project to digitize all of the analog stuff. So far, I'm up to 40TB. I've got hundreds of both video and audio tapes remaining.

But, back to the subject: I'm all ears ... dang, I can remember when rabbit ears would do the trick. Ok, rephrase, I'ma gonna pay attention to this thread. And no doubt will have questions for y'all in time.

Um... yeah you can get live tv/news. Yeah, u can record. But generally speaking that would be a PITA. :) And since it's world wide broadcasts... who decides wut, wen, wear. ;)

I haven't had cable in about ten years, and I haven't really missed it at all. Since the rise of the digital signal, local stations are able to put out much more stations than they could with analog. Living near bigger cities helps, but even in the small town I live in, with nothing but a digital signal, I get about 30 channels, from local, 24 hour news, 2 weather channels, a movie channel, 2 channels dedicated to older shows, 2 crime/police style stations, and various others, even religious programming. So I really feel there's no need for cable.
