vape is etymologically a verb. The use of "vape" as a noun by English 101 repeaters has convinced definition websites to submit to this usage.

If you do this, I genuinely hope you step on a lego.

ETA: I have seen it's use as a noun in the form of "Let's go for a vape." This is reasonable. But the device itself is not a vape.

1: unfortunately that's just the way language is.
2: there is a difference between "definition website" and "dictionary website".
Unless there can be an established, recognised source for 'definition' in English, there will always be inconsistent usage.

Dictionaries have ended up having to present the most statistically prevalent meanings of words.... at the time... and the time changes, so the dictionary changes.

Guess I'm old too.
To me, 'Vape' is a verb. NOT a noun.
I guess I don't strenuously object to the noun usage, I called cigs 'smokes' too. However, I use vape as a verb. My device is "my e-cig" or "my mod".

"Pass my e-cig please"
"Here you go"
"Thanks guy"
;)

I call it my "vape". "Pass my vape". I called cigarettes "smokes", as do many people. I think it's ridiculous people would even be upset about calling it that. "Pass my personal vaporizer please" sounds like your full of yourself imo.

"Pass my APV please"
"APV?"
"It stands for advanced personal vaporizer good sir"
"Umm ok here.." while rolling their eyes...

"Pass my vape please"
"Here you go"
"Thanks guy"

I can understand the OPs frustration, maybe its my age, who knows. I tend to try my best to keep correct grammar alive.

I have 2 sons that are in their early 20's and they actually read and write. They keep me up to date with modern terminology.

I have various internal rants when watching television and reading thru forum posts, but what can I do? I have accepted so much, my little rants are less and less. Heck like is so full of more important things to get upset about.

I call my set up "my vaporizer". I feel awkward calling it my "MOD" or APV.

Its part of life , as always as we get older , it means adjusting and acceptance, or we end up being grumpy old farts, sitting in our comfy chair , arguing with the world.

Heck we call the things we drive "Cars" which came from the word "horseless carriage".
I think the correct term is automobile.

But we prefer to say "hey mom can I have the car keys?"...... Than saying "hey Mom can I borrow the automobile?"

So that's where I went wrong :|

Just don't ask me to pass my personal electronic nicotine inhalation system and we're all good :)
