I have to wonder why a shop will sell complex in house made coils without the knowledge of their safe use. Because a 0.12 ohm coil even with a 30A battery in a mech sure isn't a great idea either. They should stick to smok products and drop anything more advanced than that.

That's pretty much all they sell. If you go on their website you'll see that don't carry much of anything: Savour The Vapour

I was in a vape shop last week looking to get some wire. It was not a normal shop I go to but was on the side of town where I was running errands and figured I stop in since they were a few doors down...

Walk in and ask what wire they have... He tells me they don't sell wick, wire or rebuildable materials anymore because nobody buys them. he said I was the 1st person in 4 months to ask about wire...

What the what........

While talking with him the owner (or manager - not sure which) comes out from the back after hearing the convo and says he might still have a few rolls in the back. He looks and comes back out with 2 spools of 26G Kanthal. I ask how much and he says I can have them for free as he just wants them gone...

I don't think many people rebuild anymore let alone use mechs. Rebuilders who also use a mech? In the severe minority would be my guess...

Sadly this translates to vape shop employees as well. They really don't know about battery safety, mechs and RBA's anymore..
We have premade coils from Geek Vape and some UD Cotton, anybody who is serious about rebuilding buys online anyway.

BUT, we sell a SH*T TON of blister pack coils. :D

Myself and one other guy at our other store rebuild, all the rest use drop ins. My gear is always a conversation piece for customers. Same with the tube amp I brought in to stream audio in the store.

I don't think it is allowed here, you can't post verbatim conversations from problem shops. I could be wrong about just mentioning shops. It's an admin thing and I was cautioned once about it with Eciggity. ;)

Google and Yelp play by different rules.
That's really interesting. I guess we'll see because I've been spending a lot of time over on another forum and when I first posted the above experience I didn't mention the shop name. An admin on there who liked my post replied "it's ok to mention the shop, it might help someone". She also moved my post to their Hall of Shame thread

You're exactly right, in my Google review I said that if it's pods you're after this place is fine, anything else, go elsewhere. They do sell rta's, rda's, batteries, cotton and wire though

Thanks for making me feel even older.
But at least you got a good deal on your wire !

:toast:

I tired to pay something, anything, for them but the guy just said take them... I felt bad taking the wire and leaving without buying anything...

But I have enough 26g Kanthal to last a looooooong time now.. :p

Let's face it. The number of people into vaping who build, let alone use mechs, is pretty small. I mean we're the ones who read Mooch's battery reviews for entertainment. We're not neck bearded hipsters, we're geeks at heart. And that's OK. If the average person is happy with their pod or Smok setup and they're not smoking, bless 'em and let them continue along.

They're likely the same people who have no idea why you would use a tube Amp when transistors came out 60 years ago. Actually not true. They probably don't even know what a transistor is either. Now it's the Bluetooth and Spotify generation.

Just need to throw this experience out there because I'm so annoyed by it.

I went into a local vape shop today to buy some more wire. They were out of what I wanted so the guy suggested I buy one of their premade house coils until they get more of my preferred wire in. I asked what they ohm out at and the Fused Clapton ni80 that he wanted me to buy was a .12 - .15 coil. I proceeded to explain that the mech that I had in my hand, and showed him, is one that hits great at .4 ohms and I use a pink Samsung 30q in. He tells me that they sell that battery there and I'd be ok with the low build because it's a 30A battery.

After picking my jaw up off of the floor, I explained that I bought my batteries from them and the Samsung 30q has a 15A cdr. He tells me that I'm wrong and it's a 30A battery. I looked him in the eye and asked him, so you're telling me, knowing I'm using a mech, that I can build for 30 Amps using the 30q? I then pulled up the 30q on Google, found @Mooch and his ratings and pointed out that it's a 15A cdr.

How many people have they told this is a 30A battery?

Shops like this give our industry a bad reputation. For those in my area, because there are a few, Shop name: Savour The Vapour, they have 3 locations.
Well - thank God you know your stuff. Many rely on the vape shop's expertise and your experience shows that one still has to be knowledgeable --especially with a mech!

The vape shop near me sucks --for lack of a better word. They are more interested in $'s than safety, and they look like a bunch of .... heads plus they are way rude. Went in twice and that was it.

I'm a loyal type customer so their loss.

Thank God for the forum. I became educated and know what I want so I buy online from reputable, recommended sources.

I argued with a Snap Back wearing Neck Beard shop owner down here once, he told me that Mooch's info was outdated and didn't really apply.

I'd post your concerns on their Facebook group and give the owner a call... Hopefully he isn't like the dolt down here.

I don't think you can call out specific vape shops in the general forum.
Why not? --- This is America land of the free ---but then again as of late things have changed a lot.....

See my reply above. The shop Manager told me straight up that she doesn't know ohms law or the amperage of all of their batteries but she "knows it's important".

She probably only moonlights there. I expect her full time job is in a public service department !.

So now they are telling me a .15 build is safe with a 15A battery AGAIN! What do I say to that? I'm speechless

I used to own a shop like this. Turns out the advice I gave was "iffy" and half my clientele blew themselves up (whoops! my bad) and I had to shut down. Really made me wish I read more on steam engine.

I ran a vape store back in the 50's. We'd run some chicken wire through a bale of hay. Then we'd soak our old cigarettes in ditch water until it was nice and brown, pour it on the hay. Finally we'd hook up the chicken wire to a lightning rod and wait for a storm. I had to close the store down when all of my customers died too but it was fun while it lasted.
