List Editing Guidelines and Tips

Starting this thread to discuss the "nuts and bolts" of editing The List.

....
Like the idea of putting "EDITING" at top of list while in the process of editing.

ETAA:

@list_editors: What I'd suggest is go into editing of list, copy list and paste below current list
in the same post that is being edited
, edit copied list, do a preview and check for any mistakes. If it's good, erase 'old' list and save.

THIS IS MY SUGGESTIONS FOR LIST EDITING. If you have ANY questions, comments, improvements, corrections, etc., PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST THEM.

EDIT POST - Type LIST IS BEING EDITED at the top of the post - SAVE and continue


A pictorial (examples only, not the actual list being edited):

Step One:

Click on EDIT POST

Step Two:

Click on GO ADVANCED

Step Three:

If you can see any colored text, then click on the upper left-hand icon to switch to Source Mode

This is what the post should look like before starting to edit. This is Source Mode, you can see the bracketed formatting codes. Copying and pasting in this mode should be the safer way to preserve the desired formatting.

Select everything in the post, copy it, then click below the last line in the post - hit return a few times to get some separation between the two copies, and paste the copied post.

Now do any editing on either post - the top one will probably be easiest to work with. After making changes (on only one of the copies) click on the "PREVIEW CHANGES" button (next to the "SUBMIT CHANGES" button) to check out the edits and proofread.

When edits are complete, select the old copy and delete.

BE SURE TO DELETE THE "LIST IS BEING EDITED" STATEMENT.

Click on the "SAVE CHANGES" button.

You're done.

FYI. Putting EDITING in the top of the post AND SAVING IT before further editing will NOT guarantee it won't get stomped on (still depends on timing)... but it will help.

You should also probably add something about removing the "EDITING" comment before the last save.

I did that for all the List Editors - to see if it made sense, and to give everyone something to work on/ work with.

times do not get put in by you - classy will do that. please, use the names of people you pmed. check their turning days, adjust and put in list. make sure turnings get put in in proper order - i.e. 8-01 does not come after 8-28!

How did the "EDITING", save, edit, remove "EDITING", save work out for you morri?

Does anyone know if CES is comfortable with these procedures and editing the list. She's up next in rotation.

Also I haven't heard from classy or followed up on an alternate yet.

Tom's "EDITING" procedure won't work unless everyone follows it 100% of the time.....

Actually, please see whole thread. I want to make sure you know about this when editing the list. It should reduce (but not eliminate) the chance that editing changes get "stomped on".

Tom's procedure will only help if we ALL follow it... including the mod filling in the times.

Also, do you have an alternate that fills times in for you (us) when you're unavailable?

Should the need ever arise, you might try asking someone to please get a time for you if you need it immediately and I am not here.
(remember... it almost got removed... but I care about this and said I wanted to keep providing it the for the group)

This would only be needed for a drop in that thinks they will be turning the next day and the leap year thing is involved.

ATTENTION EDITORS: For those that didn't read it.. you'll want to click on that "here's what: To be added" link classy had above. So she's using the "to be added" list to fill in the times, not the main list.....

Additional thought, Tom...

(I love how things change)

If there's only one list editor assigned at any one time AND if classy is not editing the list because she's posting in the "to be added" area..... what does the "EDITING"-comment process do?

Of course, if she goes back to editing the list directly, then ...welll... you'd need it there again. If you change it to omit the "EDITING" thing... I'd save this copy... ♪♫♪♫ ch-ch-ch-changes! ♪♫♪♫

I'm good with Catt's suggested procedures- he did a great job. I feel pretty comfortable with editing (I also plan to save a copy of the list with formatting tags as a word document prior to beginning to edit) . I hadn't chimed in here before because i had nothing to add to the suggestions

the editing comment prevents transfer of the list too early, and it also communicates to anyone who happens along during that time that someone is working on it- so there aren't 60 posts asking if the list has been updated yet (people can also look at the last edited time stamp in the post too)
