8-oHas anyone heard that these batteries for our e-cigs are a fire hazzard? It seems like I heard this when I firest started vaping, but, I did nor realize the seriousness of this issue.

Can any of you techies out there explain the risk associated with Lith Ion batteries and what we can do to minimize this risk?

Hi Still,

I find very littel risk with them. I use protected batteries only now like the 14500.
Just dont leave your battys in the chargers overnight or when you leave.
Lithium has been around a long time now with very little problems. Dont't lose sleep over it. I wouldn't worry about any fires. Just use common sense when charging and take them out when they are fiinished charging..

all unprotected batteries have risk of explosion/fire.
there is nothing special about lith ion batts. your AA in that remote over there are lith ion probably. your cell phone battery is undoubtedly lith ion. buy protected batteries and you wont have a problem. if you buy unprotected you just have to make sure not to over/under charge or you're risking your face

I spent a good bit of time yesterday following up the Lithium Ion battery circumstance, and found out much more about the hazards than I ever expected.
There is a raft of information available about the fire and explosion incidents connected to Li-Ion battery use (and mis-use).

Although I have not found more than just a few references of these problems connected to e-cig products so far, the potential is HUGE.
Please believe me when I say that these things ARE NOT being marketed with adequate safety information about storage/ charging/ mis-use/ and disposal.

I like my 510(s) very much, and will continue to use them every day, but I am quite concerned about the dangers that exist.
These things are produced with a disturbing bent on "profit without excessive disclosure".

I would tend to believe that the battery and charging hardware situation that we are currently using would NEVER pass any Underwriters Lab. testing as it is.

I will be further investigating all aspects of the hardware I am using a lot closer before I make any further recommendations to other people about these things.

I would like to carry on further INTELLIGENT discussion about this topic.
It would be a whole lot more convenient if this forum didn't so severely restrict the ability to use linking in posts though.

It doesn't. You just have to have 15 posts before you can start linking. It's a tool to curb the spammers that make new accounts just to advertise their wares.

I knew there was some kind of qualifier, I guess I just have not dug deep enough to uncover the particulars.

Almost there now, I look forward to easily pass on pertinent information without jumping through hoops.

The restriction is a pretty common complaint among posting users.
I will pass that on in the future.

The 15 post rule to post links is to stop spamming. Sorry, but we get a lot of that here and we deal with it quickly.

All up in your grill..
I have handled thousands of these type batteries and they are definitely problematic. I have seen them light up and stay on until dead. (in some cases they stayed lit up for like 4 days) But they produce no heat whatsoever that I can detect. Nor do they seem to cause sparks or significant volt output. I would say that by order of magnitude (based on my experience) that they are much safer then a zippo lighter. I am not worried.

I ended getting worked up about the thread labled " eicgsellers insurance huh? and smething about Ash" where I posted information on the 4th,5th, or 6th?? pages that go into the Lithium Ion battery safety issue and some reporting on fires that might have belonged here also. In that instance it was a tool to convince readers about safety issues and thier suppliers being open and frank with an insurance agent to get adequate coverage for a potentally dangerous product.
Lf it turns out that insurance underwriting is precluded due to the nature of this stuffl we might see it cease to exist because of being priced out of an essential business need (insurance).
Check out the thread, there is some disturbing data and infornative safety outlines in the links. '
