A regulated device, by design separates atomizer from battery therefore an atomizer short has been eliminated as a risk. But in doing so, it adds an unknown risk of an internal short at the battery end of the circuitry. I can test for an atomizer short, thus present my own element of risk reductions. This is a positive human interaction. I cannot test for an internal circuitry short. This is assuming an unknown risk.
This is a point that I have made myself elsewhere.

I say, that in the hands of a grown up and knowledgeable user, a fully unregulated device, especially a simple tube, like say the Kennedy Vindicator, is actually safer than a regulated one for the reason you allude to here.

Continuing to use the Vindicator as an example, unless run over by a train or buried in the yard maybe, that device will be working perfectly 100 years from now. Somebody would probably have a better chance of being hit by lightning than experiencing a failure that was actually the fault of that mod. They would have to do something truly idiotic to hurt themselves with a device that simple. Like put a battery in it from ebay for instance.

With a regulated device, even a good one, technological circumstances entirely beyond your knowledge and control can circumvent even the most responsible habits, which is what you're saying.

I have all kinds of devices and like them all.

Was on vacation came back to read all this thread, sorry this got so out of hand. just to put some things clear.

1. I already use mechs, not asking here if If I should or not.

2. Though I don't think I need to argue why I prefer mechs some of the time (the silly comment about the beating boyfriend), For me it has to do with the feel of the tube, the mechanical button, how it hits on a fresh battery (yes a 300w mod will hit harder but i said how it hits not how hard), form factor is important to me.

3. Reading through your comments all of you are much more experienced than me and I respect your opinions though because I only used the broadside till now (in the mech world) I always felt a little safer because of the non hybrid top cap (which is one of the reasons I wanted a mech with one), though it will only maybe guard from human error, I make mistakes like anyone, besides i have had a squonk 510 pin break while screwing down my atty on a dead rabbit which kind of freaked me out, even though it wasn't on a mech at the time (and no i wasn't trying to torque it like crazy).

4. I have about 20 something RTA's and RDA's ad to tell you the truth most of them only about 30% of them I know are hybrid safe or not, most of them for me are in the middle, pin protrudes, but since I never used a hybrid I am not sure it's enough, no matter how many youtube videos I watched (hundreds) I still can be sure because I have no experience with hybrid mechs, and watching videos most have a macro lense or extreme close up on the pins and I just cant gauge the amount on my pins since im near sighted , to make things worse some reviewers have reviewed products which they state have a safe 510, but the same product that I have bought the 510 is nearly flush (plenty of examples of this also in online images)

for all these reasons I would prefer just to take the voltage drop hit, and use most of the RDA's and RTA's I bought and like on a mech tube without fearing from a hard short because I miss judged the 510. I don't build that low > 0.2 ohms and the broadside was hitting plenty hard for me, my main issue with it these days is only battery life, that's why I was looking for a 21700, a lockable switch would be a nice bonus, and the isoled sleeve is actually something I really want if I need to use positive down on a mech.

so after looking for a while I did realize that what I'm looking for doesn't exist, so closest thing i found was the Nato mod, which the most important features, and sadly I really don't like the form factor, which for me is important in my mech. So the options now are to stay with the admiral and carry around 4 18650's every day I leave for work ( I don't always use all 4 but since I stopped smoking 2 years ago one of my biggest fears is being stuck with no vape for a couple of hours ). The other thought I had was buying a kennedy vindicator and just take a "chance" on the 510's I think are protruding enough, and are static or can be screwed out a little safely (btw I say a youtuber that uses a small rubber o-ring in the 510 to make it protrude out just a little more, seems unsafe to me but do you guys have any thoughts on this?) Or just buying a ruby 21 and just building high and spacing the coils so I will not need to worry about the hybrid top.

Would appreciate any advice.

p.s.
I just realised, if OP was hell bent on his requirements (and I'm being very sincere in this) he could always make his own. Get a mini lathe (damn I cringe whenever I see one), buy some bar stock (copper or brass would be easier to machine), and he can turn the tube itself, cut the screw threads for the 510, and find his favourite screw in button to complete the circuit and HEY PRESTO.
I admit i had the same thoughts, and am trying to source a mini lathe but this is a long term project which will take me some time. I would love to be able to solve this issue sooner rather than later since this is a hassle. But kudos to you sir for the best recommendation in this thread so far :)

Thanks,

This particular one stuck out but I'll try to respond to the rest as much as I can. If you're going to get a tube, and if you're worried about whether an atomiser will/won't be safe, then I would suggest buying an atomiser made for the mod. In the case of Deathwish (which was my first mech combo) they basically sold it as a kit, atomiser and tube together - so they engineered it for that purpose. What you'll find is that the threading on the pin is done in such a way that unless you want to extend the threading it will only go so far, with the furthest being considered safe, so you can't mess it up.

Secondly I want to commend your approach to using mechs and safety, it's good to see that you're taking the process seriously and asking valid questions, even if they can appear a little strange given you have used mechs before.

Thirdly, I also want to point out that a lot of the roadblocks you're putting up seem contradictory in nature. The most talked about risk with mechanical mods is the lack of protection and that doesn't change. What is just as widely talked about is how to mitigate those risks; good batteries with intact wraps, proper 510 connection (and the protruding pin aspect is to prevent physical contact, I believe - and please don't quote me on this, that the protrusion only needs to be 1mm?? in length to prevent connection with the external part of the atomiser, as long as that's maintained it won't connect or arc-skip), as well as proper knowledge of Ohm's law. Given that the risks as well as the ways to minimise them are well documented, as well as an abundance of mech users who are testaments to safe operation and no accidents at this time (myself included), you need to appreciate that there's not much more we can say to ease your mind and really it will come down to your choice to use.

I can relate to not wanting to go back to the cigs, however if your goal is to stay off them - you will need to get spare batteries for your mod. As for myself, I have 3-4 on hand at any one time even though I would go through 1.5 batteries in a normal work day, just in case.

If you have the time, I'd highly recommend checking out The Vaping Bogan if you haven't already - I really REALLY enjoy his videos and his approach to battery and mod safety is more than thorough which should put you at ease, plus he doesn't make it overly complex (complex and Bogan don't belong in the same sentence :p) but he delivers the information in a way that makes sense and is usable.

It is best that it is a long-term project, if you start experimenting with some of these mods that you might have reservations about, I have no doubt you'll pick up elements that you could incorporate into your design, not to mention elements you enjoy - which will give you a wealth of ideas with which to make your own. Plus by having the equipment to make your own you will look at mods in a very different light, and in a very short space of time see it from a manufacturing perspective which will probably answer some questions as to why something hasn't been done before. The Broadside mod has been considered one of the safest mechanical tubes, which is a pretty impressive feat.

Given what you'd be doing, and the material you're working with, cheaper is definitely better. Firstly because the last thing you need is a massive amount of torque/rpm tearing your work to shreds because you set the tailstock wrong. Secondly because you would be better off spending the money on tool/materials rather than the machine itself and Third - because your standard 1phase wall outlets aren't designed for heavy machinery, so the machines that are compatible are toys for the most part, just a question of how expensive those toys are.

SIEG C2/180x300mm Variable Speed Mini Lathe with Auto Feed | eBay

You can get them cheaper, it's a standard template in that range so pay attention to some of the reviews, the QA is what will be different, rather than the machine itself.

As to a review, check out This Old Tony (link below), if you're into machining and dad jokes he is quite good, and his videos are very informative. Because he is a hobby machinist I've noticed the detail he goes into actually teaches rather than tells. The difference being how some people who have been doing a job for years gloss over a lot of different critical points because to them it's assumed.

A really long excellent and exceedingly helpful post.
I would never EVER want to downplay the importance of a properly protruding positive center pin in direct to battery hybrid tube mods. Your (the OP) caution there is well founded.

With that in mind, please hear me correctly when I say, I think you are unduly allowing that caution to keep you from a great vaping experience. There is a nearly endless array of excellent and affordable atomizers that are perfectly suited to to a hybrid connection. It sounds like you already have several.

Allow me please to suggest this video, which may bring some good discussion too. The Vindicator 21 is a nearly perfect masterpiece of quality, simplicity and performance.

Thank you both for your comments.

Although like you said I do use mechs I have never used a hybrid mech before and I think that my major barrier, I do see tons of youtube and also this old tony (the demo he did turning on some china mini lathe made me think I might be able to create a tube, Also though I might just thread a tube and use the broadside top 510 and perhaps buy a new button and use it there)

The reason I'm asking so many questions regarding this is that I find my vaping taste changes a lot, every few weeks the liquids I prefer, or RTA, RDA's I prefer using, that's the reason I have so many atties, and that is the reason I wanted a mech that can be safely used with most of them.

I have seen tons of reviews from youtube reviewers, and to be honest I do fancy the Vindicator and the Deathwish mods ghostship the most (saw a couple of reviews of it working with a 21700 if it's a 30T).
Only question I have now is if I feel confident enough I will like them and use them for the cost or if I should try a clone first to see if I feel ok with hybrids ( Usually i don't like clones, and i don't think they are the same quality, but i don't want a 200$ paperweight at home. )

Oh, btw you never commented on if you would put a small o ring in the 510 for it to protrude a little more like
this person suggests:

If you get a Vindicator I'm sure you'll like it. They are excellent mods. Yes with a hybrid you definitely need to have a protruding 510 pin. Personally I would not put an oring under a 510 to make it protrude. Heat does bad things to rubber. Also I personally would not use an RTA on a hybrid mech mod. Some people will but I won't.

You know, with just about any device anybody can name, there's always some people who don't like it for some reason.

I cannot recall ever reading a single comment anywhere from anybody saying they had any problem with the Vindicator 21. It manages to do everything it's category requires very well and that at a very reasonable price to boot.

Yeah, me either. Especially not when there's zillions of good attys that wouldn't need it anyway.

...works for me.
Now wait jist a minute here, First you say this, and then your signature says this:
do not vape like me !
:D

Seriously though, I love homespun stuff like this if somebody has the wherewithal to do it, but that's the point. Most are going to have neither the knowledge nor equipment to do it right like you do.

Well after hearing all the praise for the Vindicator I went to their site to purchase one (SS, CC and SS housing) only to find out during checkout they don't ship to my country :(

I shot them a mail to see if we can sort this out but no response yet. Is there another reliable site where i can get it in about the same price and customize it (like choosing a CC button and the housing material) that ships internationally?

Now to order a mini lathe from ebay....

Thanks,

Can't go wrong with the vindicator - though I'd highly recommend the SS version, I got the copper and it patina's like crazy, drives me mental when I get green hands somedays.

Should be able to find one with some basic tooling thrown in, like inserts and such. If you treat them right they would last you quite a while, especially with soft material. Inserts, tool holders and any of your taper attachments will cost a bit but last a while, if you wanted to be cheap you can get High-Speed-Steel blanks but that requires a bit of shaping and a lot of practice, however they are REALLY cheap by comparison, and you can get some interesting profiles.

Yeah, what is your country. No promises, but I might know somebody who can hook you up. Maybe. Great guy and a true expert who is in this business.
