like the title says, looking for a decent auto-ranging mm. i'm mainly looking for one that will give accurate ohms readings. i'm considering this one:

Amazon.com: Equus 3320 Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter: Automotive

i already have a 5 buck mm that does ok on volts, but shorting the leads measures 1.7 ohms on new batts and there is no way to adjust it. so i don't trust it.

i want to stay under/around 20 bucks if possible, so no Flukes need apply :)

Polish out the lead tips to a fine point, just use fine sandpaper, emery board or whatever. A little oxidation there can certainly cause problems.

Short the leads and note the reading. Read your coil and subtract. That's the old school method of zeroing out the resistance. Not as convenient as the meters with the "REL" button, but available everywhere.

The problem is in the leads, not the meter. Most low end DMMs have really cheap and thin test leads, hence the high resistance (well, for test leads 1.7 is high!) If you can replace them with better leads you should see a marked drop. But subtraction always works.

I use this model. I got it locally for about 3x the price a few years ago. On mine the leads read out at 0.3ohm and after doing the math it agrees with my vamo 100% of the time. It does read my battery's about 0.1v high compared to my friends fluke but it is consistent in that error reading at differing voltages.

Edit: Just remembered you wanted an auto ranging meter. I have had several cheap auto ranging meters and never had one that worked well. If auto ranging is a must you might want to thing about a higher end meter.

shorting the leads without sanding them or anything i got a reading of 00.0 - 00.1 it kept bouncing back and forth so id say thats pretty good :D

This is the meter that I have. I like it - when I touch the leads together it reads 0 ohms. The leads seem to be of reasonable quality, too. Been using it for about 3 months and very happy with it so far.

If you can afford to spend a little more, you'll be delighted with this one.

http://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-1-digital-multimeter-98674.html

You'll be amazed at the number of things you will find to do with this, and in the process you will impress your family, friends, neighbors and ...

Chicks dig the long leads.

just read the reviews for it, it annoys me when people dont give it 5 starts and then dont put anything in the cons part of the review. lol if it had no downfalls then give it 5 starts ... people....

with the very small ohm reading we are trying to read i dont think u should cheap out tooo much on a meter seems a $20 meter is about right where you want to be.

not bashing the $7 fasttech meter, thats probably normally a $20 meter knowing fasttechs prices haha

:2c:

You can pick up a Klein Tools MM100 for around 20 bucks. Made in USA, mine meters out at .1Ω
Uses a 9v battery. After trying a cheap china brand that crapped out, I've used mine daily for almost a year and it's still going strong.
