I haven’t even got around to experimenting with coils yet aside with the ones that came with my mod. I don’t even know what my mod is considered, just that it only operates between 40-60 watts. That would be another question; where do I want to be vaping at ideally on the scale of up to 225 watts?
It depends on the coil. Coils generally have a recommendeded wattage printed on them

Thank you all for the info and suggestions!

While someday I may get into building I’m nowhere near ready for that yet so I want to stick with the simplest method possible. And I definitely need a tank, as my chain-smoking has become chain-vaping.

I do like the idea of having more tanks (or more mods) because I am using a few different flavors of juice.

I’ve seen where you can buy the mod and tanks separately but how do you know what will work with what?
The 510 connection is universal. Smok products are built around cloud chasing. I wpuld 3rd the reccomendation on the Crown 1 I have the mini and it is one of the only tanks I like. Dont worry about drippers just yet, you can get to those when you are ready. I would suggest a Minikin v2 as far as mods go. It is a solid device that can grow with you. I wish they had them when I was new.

The original crown tank gets great reviews for flavor and although it is set up to sub0hm it has a wide variety of coils, including a 1.2 coil I think, if you want to "try out" lower wattage vaping to get a sense of how you like it. It won't be the same as a dedicated MTL tank, due to the way it's constructed with airflow and drip tip, but it could give you an idea and lots of wattage ranges to try out.

Priming matters, and the best way to find your sweet spot is to prime as Letitia suggests. Often, you can "slightly" overshoot your "best wattage" and then dial it back to what feels best. It's good to read the "recommended wattage" of the manufacturer, but it is just that, a recommendation. I know I often vape "below' the recommended wattage, and usually not above it. You can, but it may shorten coil life if you go too high above "recommended" wattage.

I can think of 0 reasons to vape at say 200 watts, and most mods claiming their board has that capacity (if it's a two battery mod), well, there aren't necessarily a pair of 18659s that will support that wattage, you'd have to look at a 3 battery or 27-- series mod. With that said, in my opinion there isn't a ton to be "gained" by vaping at that wattage, and few folks really are that happy vaping at such a high wattage, it just isn't necessary (unless you are entering a cloud chasing competition or something.)

With that said, I am a low wattage vaper, so perhaps there are folks who find that to be their "sweet spot." But I'd expect the majority of vapers to be vaping below that threshold most of the time, if not all the time, with a few outliers and etc., of course.

When considering wattage it's good to consider the batteries you have and what wattage they can safely support. To learn about battery safety, here is as good a place to start as any: Mooch's blog | E-Cigarette Forum

Baditude's blog is a great resource as well for many items, including battery safety.

Good luck,

Anna

Hello. I am a fairly new vaper, started about a month ago. I found a local vape shop that helped me choose a device which I’m using to stop smoking cigs (27 days without a smoke after 25 years so far). So I’m currently using the Smok Priv V8, which is good but I’m looking for an upgrade. My local shop pretty much only sells Smok products so the brand is convenient but I’m open to other brands too. I’m just finding the research overwhelming! I’d like a much bigger tank, currently have 3ml but I’ve seen some Smok models with 8ml tanks which would be nice. Not necessarily interested in big clouds just want something that will keep me off analogs. I’d like a digital display but am also finding that there are way more settings that I want or need to understand. Just need something durable, reliable, that doesn’t leak. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome and glad you joined.
Glad you are vaping now, be safe.
Might like to read some commentaries on sub-ohm vaping:

Thank you all for the info and advice you’ve provided. I’ve been doing a bunch of recommended reading and research the past couple days. I have another request for input:

Now I’m wondering if I got started on vaping the “correct” way. From the reading I’ve done, it sounds like I should have started with plus ohm vaping (yeah didn’t even know that existed until yesterday), since it’s Supposed to be more similar to smoking. I have tried to quit smoking using the Blu+ kits over and over again for the past few years. Didn’t do a thing for me. Is that considered plus ohm? Is this something I should try with an actual vape mod?

My local shop set me up with the sub ohm kit. Here’s a good kit, here’s the batteries, liquid, etc that go with it. I started out with a 12mg nicotine e-juice which I’m still using mixed with a 6mg. I’ve had some ups and downs with it but I haven’t gone back to analog yet, which oddly I still have cravings for. This is the first time I’ve ever really “quit” so I don’t know what to expect.

I just don’t feel like I’ve found that “sweet spot” yet and that’s what I’m looking for.

So, any advice on plus vs sub ohm vaping would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on ceramic coils? Better, worse than traditional coils? Safer, less safe, etc?

Thanks again.

Sub-ohm is using any coil that is less than 1.0 ohm. "Standard" coils are anything above 1.0 ohm. Most new vapers start out with standard ohm tanks. They provide a "cooler" vape and a more restricted air draw that is usually more accepted by newer vapers.

Yes, the Blu cigalikes are considered a "standard" ohm battery device. It's understandable that they didn't do anything for you. A cigarette sized battery is too weak for vaping, but because they "look" like a cigarette smokers try them first. When they are disappointed with their performance, they either go back to smoking or research for better performing vaping devices with stronger and larger batteries.

Our vaping preferences can change over time. For years I preferred a higher-ohm, lower wattage setup. Then when I went to work for a vape shop, and I was exposed to more sub-ohm higher wattage setups and that gradually became my norm or "sweet spot".

I used a 2.0 ohm cartomizer with a very low powered regulated mod (equivalent to a 10 watt device today) when I first began vaping, and was very happy. My current preference is a 0.5 ohm coil vaping at 30 watts with a 75 watt battery device. My sweet spot changed over time.

I just don’t feel like I’ve found that “sweet spot” yet and that’s what I’m looking for.
That's a pretty common statement, actually. It can take weeks, months, or even years to find your sweet spot. Generally speaking, most vapers stop smoking and find that they enjoy vaping more than smoking even if they haven't found that perfect vape yet.

There are as many vape setups as there are different vapers. Everyone has their own peculiarities and preferences, and there is a setup that is perfect for them somewhere. The trick is to research and experiment to find your particular sweet spot.

So, any advice on plus vs sub ohm vaping would be greatly appreciated.
I already suggested a tank that uses both types of coils. If you got one, you could try a 1.25 ohm and a 0.5 ohm coil to see which style you prefer. The mod you already have can use both the tank and either ohm coil.

I can't predict which style of vaping you will prefer. I'm not you, but you are.

No experience with ceramic coils. Sorry.

Thank you! I’ve been reading these all day and my mind is spinning! You’ve given me a TON of useful info though!
Some folks like sub ohm'g and would not vape any other way. Plus or non sub brought me to the dance, economy, taste, simplicity wins in my book.

For a versatile tank option, i'd throw the Tobeco Super Tank Mini into the mix... most Aspire coils, and several Vaporesso coils (and others) will match up making it easy to find coils if you are in a bind and need them locally. It's a durable tank, and has one of the easiest top fill systems making it a good fit if you want more capacity, but don't want a huge tank on top of your device... it's just so easy to refill. These can be had around the interwebs for about 20 bux and less if you hit up a deal. I ran one for about a year with the .5 Aspire clapton coils and could produce good clouds on demand, or run it cooler when not interested in more vapor. Very reliable.

Another option to have more capacity onboard is squonking... but that usually takes you down the path of a rebuildable atomizer... adds more terms and equipment choices... or otherwise can be a little intimidating to consider when you are new to vaping. My good old Movkin disguiser sports 10ml capacity, an all day battery life, and a simple menu setup... i just can't find parts anymore, lol.

No idea what that was all about?!?
    Dumb spammers!

The feeling for an analog will stay with you for a bit longer yet. But once you get equipment you like using instead it will fade, I promise :)

Probably took me about 3 weeks - I was only "stopping" for surgery yadda yadda and all of a sudden I woke up one morning - and wanted my vape over a cigarette. The thought of actually quitting was doable. 2 months later I'm glad my brain was so easy to trick ;)

Yeah it’s been about a month and I’m still having some cravings. Which is why I keep doing more research on vaping trying to figure out what I’m getting wrong. Im really enjoying vaping and don’t want to go back to analog!

Okay so I’ve got sidetracked (appropriately I’d say) for the past couple days researching batteries. Apparently the ones I’m using are not good so I need to find a replacement ASAP.
I don’t want to end up a bad statistic towards vaping!

On that note, it seems that I need to first find a mod and a tank, decide what coils I want to use and then determine the batteries to use. Does that sound right?

So I ask for help, again. I’m nervous, and feel somewhat irresponsible, using the set up I have right now, but I knew absolutely nothing about vaping when I started. I had finally talked myself into quitting smoking and knew I needed something to help me do it so I trusted the advice of the kid working at the vape shop. Please don’t hold that against me.

It has been a really hard 30 days, the vape is helping, and I really appreciate all the advice, tips, info, etc that you all have provided me so far.

The thing is, i now know the setups I have are sub ohm, and everything I’ve been researching on my own has apparently been for sub ohm vaping. The info and advice I’m getting here seem to be for plus ohm vaping, which was really confusing me because again, just learned about that from all of you guys.

So I’ve been vaping with .15, .25 and .6 coils (thought that was a .4!). I’ve been using a Smok Priv V8 and a Smok Stick M17 (that’s the brand they sell here). I want to try a “safer” sub ohm and plus ohm vaping. I don’t see where my mods have coils available at anything near what I’m looking for. Where do I find this kind of equipment? Is there a vape mod that I can buy that would support .5-1.25 ohm for instance?

    Thanks in advance.

You are not getting something wrong, the want for a cigarette will stay with some people longer than others. I still want a cigar after I have spent the day smoking (meat) normally I would sit outside in the evening while the smoke session was coming to an end with a cigar and an ice cold screwdriver, and my brain still says hey the pork is almost ready time to light up.

Now for mod recommendations, you have gotten quite a few the one that I upgraded to was a Joyetech eVic Primo 2.0 that I use Sony VTC5A with the Aries tank that comes with the kit on GearBest is 4ml not much better than your 3ml but I liked it, and I still use it when I drive since dripping and driving can be bad when other drivers won't put down their phones or just get the :censored: off my road. It is a 220w box mod and when I use my Aries tank with it I run it at about 65w the great thing to me was this thing was very upgradeable if I wanted to go all Tim Taylor and MORE POWER it could, if not well then I get longer battery life. I have moved on to a Teslacig Punk and RDAs and thanks to @Letitia coils the could stand in for railroad tracks.

There is so much information, it is so easy to get overloaded and feel overwhelmed you have already jumped head first down the rabbit hole. Give it time like I said I have been vaping for just over a year now and from time to time I still want a cigar, but the funny thing is last time I did have one I smoked maybe half of it and headed back to my box mod, and butterscotch cheesecake juice. In short, remember what the Hitchhiker's Guide says Don't Panic. Well now I am not sure if I made things worse or better I hope better.

The Joyetech eVic Primo 2.0 Kit with ProCore Aries -$67.34 Online Shopping| GearBest.com comes with two coils the ProC1 which is a 0.4 and a ProC4 which is 0.15 so maybe that would not be what you are looking for since you want something that can go to 1.25 part of me want to tell you to say screw it and get some 316L ss and an RDA clone then you can build coils of all shapes and sizes. However, I know that is very intimidating when starting out, I just know that if I knew then what I know now that is how I would have started. I would really say get a mod that has adjustable wattage. I have only been doing this for a bit over a year like I said and I hate to recommend something I have not used, I have picked up tons of great recommendations for the people here so I am sure they will help you find something you will love.

"Similar to smoking vaping" do not have to mean "plus ohm vaping". My sweet spot with all my MTL tanks (Nautilus2, Siren2 RTA) are coils that are considered as sub ohm coils. I use Aspire BVC 0.7 hm coils and all my builds for Siren RTA are below 1 ohm (0.6- 0.9 ohm). I vape most of the time in the range of 12-21 watts. Also MTL do not have to mean sucking hard through smallest hole... I like good... effortless draw that produce fair size cloud of slightly warm vapor...that is why my air flow control ring is never on most restricted settings. I bought recently another MTL RTA tank (SXK Doggystyle) and hate it so far because draw is too much restricted and to inhale good amount of vapor I have to suck long and hard.

I am fairly new vaper (I vape for three months) I had a lot of problems in the beginning when I was using Smok baby beast tank and 0.15-0.25ohm coils. My throat was hurting, I was coughing my lungs out... I thought vaping is not for me but I learned about MTL and decided to give it a try. The first few puffs on Nautilus2 tank and I was saying to myself -"with this thing I think I will be able to quit cigarettes. After 3 months without cigarette I tried one a few days ago... after three puffs I felt disgust... how I could inhale such disgusting thing for almost 43 years??? Now I know I will not go back to those stinky sticks as long as I will be able to vape nicotine that taste as delicious custard.... I am 60 years old and on limited budget... cost of smoking was for me probably bigger reason to switch to vaping than health concerns (whatever damage was done in 43 years of smoking cannot be reversed) and I am amazed how cheap vaping can be if you go DIY way. 100 feet of kanthal cost less than 1 pack of marlboro, 1000ml of vg cost as much as 2 packs malboro... life time supply of cotton cost me less than 2 packs of marlboro... :) more than dozen flavorings, syringes, plastic bottles and nicotine that will last me a year cost me less that I was spending in 2 weeks for cigarettes... and making coils if you have coil jig is extremely easy... (much harder is actually securing it in RTA).. doing my own e-juice is fun....
    I love vaping!
