Never done rebuildables before, but in light of recent events I figure its time to explore my options. What are the best/most popular models for this? Is there anything beginner friendly, yet veteran worthy out there? There are so many brands and models available... I don't even know where to start.

Would anyone care to provide advice for one looking to purchase a first rda today?

How do you like to vape? That will help determine which way to lead you more than anything.
If nothing else go to fasttech and just order a bunch of different drippers, for next to nothing and see what you like. That's what I did when I first started out, ordered about $40 worth, kept the ones I liked and gifted the rest to friends.

Three basic classes of rebuildable drippers

1) Clouding Chaser - Large Build Deck, large post holes for large coils, and massive airflow (Example the Velocity RDA)
2) Flavor Chaser - Reduced or small deck/chamber, less airflow to enhance a nice, rich, warm flavor (Example the Quasar RDA)
3) Mix of the Two - Medium to Large deck/chamber, not to airy but more airflow than a flavor chaser, (Example the Mutation 234)

Understanding where you want to be, then we can direct you from there.

My favorite RDA was the Rogue or freakshow Mini.

The best flavorful RDA i tried was the Darang.

I'd recommend the Tobeco clone of the Twisted Messes V2, but I can't find anyone who carries it anymore. I bought mine from VapeNW, but ~1 week after they had em in stock, they removed the item from their website and when I asked about that, I was told that they have no plans to restock. I'm guessing that it was just too similar to the ~$60 "official" version, (it appears to be 100% identical), and Wismec or someone working on their behalf shut down its production and/or export from China. I hope I'm wrong and someone starts sellin em again, cause I want another.

Anyway, just buy a Tobeco Velocity, (V1 or V2). Imo, you really can't beat em for the price, (~$15).

Wow, thanks for all the responses... I prefer flavor over clouds and I tend to vape cool and MTL, though I do also have subohm gear that I use almost every day. I suppose what I want is a well-endorsed tootle dripper with plenty of room to build in.

I prolly can't help much in this regard then.

My lowest power setup is a Tugboat V2. Very fond of this.

Prolly to airy but my favorite old school is the Plume Veil 2.5.

Overall my most favoritest dripper is the Goon. Nothing tootle about this one though. Sooooooooooo easy to build one. Flava for days bro!!!

I will say as above try and skip the three post decks, I find them annoying. I prefer four post decks but two post is good and the Goon's bridge deck is best of all.

I would recommend an origen RDA (any version) or a nectar RDA

These two are by up there with the best MTL drippers

If you can get your hands on one The Attysmith makes great MTL RDAs

Most of what has been recommended are cloud machines and are not suited for MTL.

Achilles looks like a good MTL ( I havent used one though)
Stumpy could be tightened down (Same as above)

I thought nectar had a tank. Any experience with the Origen bf pin?

There are three different sizes for the nectar. The nano and micro are more like RDAs with a deep well. I have the middle one. Micro I think they call it. It's about as tall as a narDA. It's very similar to the origin drip well size. There is a big one that I don't know what they call it that is for sure a tank.

I moded the stock pin on my Origen for bf. It's a long squonk, but you also have alot of vape time between squonking.

It depends. With mechs safety has to be priority 1. This includes knowing the ins and outs of how the mech and atty works. There's lots of info on here do a bit of research about the use of mechs.

Prebuilt coils could be a risk on a mech. Definatly never blind put a new coil in without checking it's function first. It could be shorted or to low of a resistance for your batteries to handle.

If you go further into it. Make sure you know the difference between a mech with a positive pin and one of the pinless designs.

Pinless ie faux hybrid can be shorted out easily.

Thank you so much for the info. Not gonna strap on my crown and .25 ohm coil now :)
I've got some reading to do.

IMO, if you want to have the best of both worlds...Flavor and clouds AND have the rebuilding experience, try the Sigelei Moonshot of GeekVape Griffin 25.
While I admit, these aren't really for beginners, this is where the 'flavor vs cloud' argument is heading.
May as well be ahead of the curve.
If you really want to go to dripping an RDA and looking for ease of use, try the Magma.

OK I'm going to sound dumb. Can you put a sub ohm tank like a u well crown on a tube mod. Are mech mods only for rebuilding. I've been vaping for 2 years and am prefectly happy with my vape lifestyle.. make my own juice and I'm regularly srock piled. but I'm confused.

Going to get blasted, but...

1) Know your battery safety and Ohm's Law as far as what limits you will be asking of your batteries on any mech setup, 4.2v fresh charge/0.5ohm coil head=8.4amps (Voltage/Resistance=Amps)
2) Do not use the tank on a mech that does not have an adjustment pin on the top cap, examples do not use it with a SMPL or Tugboat Tube mod (faux hybrid direct to battery positive connection), but a mod like the Nemesis which has an adjustable positive center pin is, alright, in a sense
3) Continually inspect the 510 connection on the base of the tank, as the insulator ages due to age it shrinks and deteriorates, thus the positive pin will gradually recess further and further, if it becomes flush with the threads and/or recesses into the thread housing, try to replace the insulator or replace the whole tank entirely.
4) 20amp CDR batteries I would run the highest Ohm coil heads the uwell has 0.4 to 0.5ohm ideally. 30amp CDR batteries you could probably get away with using the 0.25 coils (4.2v/0.25ohms=16.8amps), this gives safety headroom in case of an "UHOH" moment as well as safety buffer of battery age, new battery has full mah and CDR, battery that has been heavily abused and pushed to its limits daily 6months down the road could potentially only output half its CDR and have half its mah.
