One gallon vinegar, 2 cups epsom salt, 1/4 cup dish soap. Some recipes say 1 cup dish soap. Doing a bit of research, some people say to get stronger vinegar than is sold in grocery stores. The epsom salt is not a permanent poison to plants like NaCl, it is actually an ingredient in fertilizer.

Thanks a lot! I have everything on the list. I'll get hubs to mix it up and I'll try an area away from the bunnies. I don't think it would hurt them, it's just they eat some of the weeds and use some as a hiding place from the hawks.

Do you by chance know the natural weed killing recipe? We're being overrun by weeds but because of the wild rabbits hubs doesn't want to use poison and neither of us is in good enough shape to pull the weeds by hand.

@3mg Meniere ... have you actually used that mix? And if so, was it effective for you. I've read a bunch of articles about it and most say it 'seems' effective on small weeds because it only kills off the green growth but it isn't a week killer like the commercial brands in the sense it doesn't kill the roots too, so the weeds come back.

Sometimes "weeds" is the only "green" around here. LOL. For the "season" and then they become tumbleweeds.

We used to live in a homeowners association and they were always on us for our "weeds." I liked them.

The husband buys trees from our electric company every year at a steep discount. We have a fig tree! Only one has died as yet, but he's really good about watering them, and bunnies come and "drink" from the water trench and like, it's pretty cool.

Not to many gophers left after the husband pellet gunned them. They destroy a yard. LOL the neighbor was thrilled because gophers come drown in his inground pool. That has to suck. The husband thought I'd be all upset but I was like, "Dude, it's better than POISONING them." Keeps the gopher population down a few mornings of that twice a year.

I would consider shooting gophers (I'm pretty accurate with the pellet gun) but really, I shouldn't, as in the excitement of the moment, well, I'd shoot near someplace I shouldn't like near the horse in the house behind us, or the neighbor's windows and etc.

Pulling the big stuff is necessary, but repeated applications to the small stuff will eventually kill it. The return of the zombie weeds has to do mostly with deep rooted stuff like dandelions.

My first Terv, Spock, and I did tracking. He was a great gopher hunter! We would see a new mound and send Spock. He would go the mound and dig it out. Then he would follow the underground trail (above ground) and start digging. He would open a hole. Spock came in the house and DH would sit at the hole with his shotgun. When the gopher surfaced to fill the hole - blamo! One less gopher to destroy our yard.

We miss Spock (passed in Dec 2014 from natural causes - old age).

We have an opossum that visits us fairly often but haven't seen him/her lately and that's a good sign as they feed on ticks and moles. Those moles can sure ruin a lawn, and the ticks..... well, I really doubt they will ever be gone!

Spock had to be a very special furbaby!

Plain salt works just as well in your recipe too because salt is poisonous to plants. However, far the most effective weed killer I've used has been horticultural vinegar. The home-type vinegar works too but not well. It's only about 5% and you need 10% or higher as a weed killer. Many gardeners use 20%. You can buy it on Amazon or make your own by concentrating vinegar…freezing normal vinegar to lock up the water.

Many home made weed killers will only kill the tops but not the roots. Unfortunately that's a job for Round-up.

won't you consider letting dandelions live? They make pretty flowers and you can harvest them for dandelion tea, a very healthful drink.

Dandelions are fine in a lawn, but not in a garden, IMHO. I might check out our local hardware store and see if they have some industrial strength vinegar, and spray what should be sprayed in my area.

NaCl is sodium chloride, table salt. And it permanently kills everything. Concentrated Salt Water to Kill Plants

I was wondering about the epsom salts. I sprinkle that around my plants, including house plants, and scratch it into the dirt. The plants do very well with it. Maybe because it's just a small amount? Larger concentrations are bad for plants? Actually if you chop off the leaves a few times the roots will die, but you really have to keep after them.

So glad to hear nothing is broken! I was thinking about your hubby all day. I hope he heals up quickly.

Possums eat ticks? I didn't think ticks had any or at least not many predators! Maybe I need to import some possums. Haven't seen any around here and I've already had Lyme disease and don't want to do that again!! My chiropractor diagnosed me so I went and got a blood test. A month of Doxycycline seemed to take care of it, but if I get bit again it could start all over again. That doesn't seem fair. I know a couple people on permanent disability due to undiagnosed Lyme. Evidently it's rampant around these parts. I was lucky to have gotten the bullseye marks.

Not sure, but I think it changes the pH of the soil in addition to adding the magnesium. So many plants might like that. And, again, not sure, but if it does act somewhat like a fertilizer I'd think too much might also be detrimental.

You're a good plant mom :)… epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, a micronutrient plants need to thrive…some plants need more than others. Here, in Florida our soil has very little of it so I feed it to most of my outside shrubs and plants.

Thanks, Janet! Yep, we didn't need any more health issues!
Oh my, didn't know you experienced Lyme disease! Glad your chiropractor caught it, and glad to read that Doxycycline took care of it. I was surprised to find that so many folks do have it and it can be quite debilitating.
