One of the books I have stashed away was published in England, and I spent nearly five years trying to get a copy. It wasn't out of print, was a rather expensive ($150), hard bound volume, and yet three different book chain stores and a number of small private ones, couldn't seem to care enough to get it ordered and shipped here. I finally asked my English shift manager if it would be possible to send her Mother the money and have her send the book....

Have I mentioned how determined I can be? ;)

Well, I don't know how much of a Movie Fan Huxley is as of yet, however, the "Neverending Story" is one that should capture most Kids attention .. :) .. who does not like a LuckDragon that looks like a giant furry dog .. ?? :)

I LOVE Neverending Story! Huh is only 1 year old though so he's a bit young and I'm not sure Miles at 2-1/2 will be interested yet because there are no trucks or robots in it. This movie is in their future though.

I believe "How Few Remain" is first in a series, and I'm about 1/3rd of the way thru .. I tend to read fairly slowly, attempting to digest what the Author is saying, and the fact that I read as I lay in bed at night (since I was a kid) .. so the speed with which I can finish a Book depends a lot on just how long I last before sleep hits .. some night's, it's a few minutes, some night's it's half an hour .. this one is a pretty thick book ..

At this point, I will definitely be reading the entire series .. :)

And, thanks for the tips .. :)

I have no idea how to go to sleep at night without reading! A few years back even Mike picked up the habit. Mike got me a refurbished iPad which makes it so much easier to travel instead of taking the laptop. Now I read my kindle selections on it. So now I can just slip my iPad in my purse and eliminate both the laptop and kindle.

Wow...so many of you enjoy reading in bed before going to sleep. I've been doing it for many many years...can only imagine how long it'd take me to go to sleep without reading first, anywhere from an hour to two or three hours, depending on how good the story is. Lots of nights i have to go back three or four pages cuz I couldn't recall what i'd read the night before.

And I prefer the good old paper-flip-the-pages type. Mt current favorite is Phillipa Gregory and i was fortunate enough to score eight of them from Amazon. My local library usually only have one or two of her books and it's a chore to go to other library sites to have them transferred to my local library.

The great thing about my lousy memory is that if i wait for a couple of years i can re-read a book:)

Although I have a good stash built up over the years, I do tend to cull the herd of material I know I'll never go back to .. Goodwill or Library is always appreciative

Well, the house is full of "keepers".... the ones that aren't keepers I bag up and take south with me on my annual trek to the Phoenix area. Deliver them to my brother, when he's done he passes 'em on to Dad. When he's done, he drops them off at the "library" at the facility he lives in, so many more have a chance ;)

If reading could put me to sleep, perhaps I wouldn't be so nocturnal...:( A good book does just the opposite for me...can't put it down until I reach the end...or as close to the end as I can get in an entire night...o_O
Me too. If it just towards the beginning then I am normally OK. Towards the end forget it. It's got it's hooks in to me and I'm stuck. ;)

Another "Now Why Did I Not Think of That .. ??"

In and around the St Louis region, I have lately witnessed a new Commercial Phenomena .. so far, just observed at a Car Wash, however, Mr/Ms Google indicates there are several in the Local Area ::

An enclosed Station that allows Pet Owners to enter a Booth and wash their Dog .. they go by various names, however, the concept is all the same :: from the All Paws Website ::

"For many of us, a trip to a costly dog groomer is simply not an option, leaving us to resort to the only other choice we have — the bath tub — armed with a bottle of dog shampoo and a forced smile. While hardly anyone would consider washing and grooming a dog a luxurious activity, it is for your pet.

Luckily, even on a tight budget, you can treat your favorite pooch to the luxurious treatment offered by self serve dog grooming and dog wash systems. With a wide variety of scented shampoos, snacks and even hair dryers, your dog will think he’s at a spa retreat … and all at a price you can afford.

Visiting a self serve dog wash is an opportunity for your dog to relax and enjoy getting pampered. Many locations have double basins, ensuring that if you have more than one pet, each can stay safe and protected while you tend to the other. Dog wash systems have vending machines that offer all kinds of tasty treats for the well-behaved pooch. Additionally, many pet wash stations are found at car wash businesses letting you clean your pooch while your car gets scrubbed.

Cold outside? Not a problem because self serve dog bath stations have heated water, making even a winter bath warm and comfortable. Plus, before you step out into the cold, you have the option of using one of the high-powered hair dryers at the commercial dog washing station to add the finishing touches to your pet."

Once again, I slap my forehead and say "Why Did I Not Think of That .. ??" .. I can't say how successful these things are, but I'm sure there must be a Franchise Opportunity :) .. today, I saw folks standing in line, waiting patiently for a turn .. I suppose the Homeless Populace will soon get wind of this, if not already .. Scented Shampoos .. ?? Treats at the Ready .. ?? Affordable .. ?? What would you do if you saw a Human taking advantage of this .. ?? o_O

I'd like that!!! Much easier on my back than sitting on a stool, with one hand holding the dog in the shower and the hand held shower head in my other hand...:)

Around here I've seen a Dog Grooming service that makes house calls. They come in a van equipped for cleaning and grooming. I wonder if I could offer a cut-rate service and just haul my power washer around with me.

I love "real" books, but one has to deal with circumstances...;) When I moved to PA, I took boxes of books to the library and donated them, because I would have no room to keep them. I still have two big boxes of books I won't part with, and they have stayed in boxes..:( I got a library card as soon as I got here, but the branch is very small and it didn't take more than a couple of months to go through anything there of interest. Books can be ordered from other branches, via their computer, but unless you already have the author and title...o_O I like to browse through the books, pick them up and skim a page or two before deciding....

That is so me! When we moved from PA to FL, I asked the local library if they would take my books. At first they were iffy on it. One lady came out to my SUV and when she saw the condition of the books, she took all 6 garbage bags without looking through the rest.

Most were new and only read once. My dream was to open a used book store but I couldn't justify all the weight and space four large Rubbermaid tubs would cost to move.

I did keep my hard cover books. I donated books to a friend that was having a sale for their pool club. I was giving away books left and right.

For traveling I do like the kindle. Otherwise, physical books for me. :)

What a great idea! When we had our dog my biggest problem was leaning over the tub to bathe her. And then I have to clean the tub and half the bathroom if I couldn't get her wrapped up before she shook water and soap all over the place. And if I could have stood up comfortably while doing it she would have gotten a lot more baths! I definitely would take advantage of a place like this!

We have them here. They cost about 50% more than hauling pooch to the groomer.

The self pet wash idea has been around for quite a while. Many pet stores offer them and there are even chains of them. They have the tubs, some have the big tubs with ramps, shampoo's, conditioners, towels, apron to keep you dry, brushes, combs, dryers, and best of all they clean up. Cost is $10-$15 around here.

I am still a "paper person" .. I prefer tactile the feel of it, the bending back of a page corner to mark the page .. the worn look it gets as I make my way through .. I keep a highlighter on the night stand with which to highlight anything that particularly moved me .. although, I have tried a tablet, just was not for me ..

I've been far too mobile since retiring from the military, and the massive collection of books I had accumulated through the years had to be given away. I still love to read, so the invention of the tablet has been a godsend. Now I can collect books like crazy in digital format, and not worry about where I'm going to store them or haul them in the case of another move.

When we moved from Virginia to Florida the only hard cover book I kept was my autographed edition of Tom Clancy's "Hunt for Red October." I actually got to know the arrogant p.... fairly well back in the early 90s. For an ex insurance agent he thought he was the smartest dude around. I have to admit he wrote pretty good books, at least the first 4 or 5, until he realized he got paid by the word or something and got extremely verbose.
