I knew the wiring would already be there, but not everyone knows how to work with it safely.

Well, he should...he wired it. It was on its own circuit breaker....and something tripped it in the middle of winter, and we did not know it. There were 4 feet drifts between that tub and us...we could not have checked on it, even if we had wanted to. We did not even think about it...it had survived 10 winters.

Remind him of that and that he built the darn house. He can do this!!!!

Outdoor electrical wiring is often run through a metal conduit (tubing). The conduit may have been bent in the drift, and crimped and shorted the hot wire. He'd have to meter out the wiring for shorts, with the Power turned off, to see if maybe that's the problem... why the breaker popped. Even if it's that plastic tubing, the wires could be crimped and shorted inside.

I know. I've heard all this because of the pool. Don't remember it all so I could never do it.

I take it you won't miss the hot tub?

Nope....he talked me into the hot tub instead of a pool. We had a pool where we moved from. I did not care for the hot tub....we liked getting into it after dinner, and my blood would still be too warm to sleep well even at bed time. Hubs liked the hot tub, but he did not love it like I liked that pool!!! But his argument...and rightfully so...we are a little too far north to justify the expense of a pool. This is more of a hot tube climate.

Well the wiring was under the deck and the ground. It was not exposed to the snow...so it had to be something else. Maybe a faulty breaker.

The breakers can be finicky. One for the pool is anyway. Of course we only use it during nice weather.

Breakers generally shouldn't be used as On/Off Switches. A properly wired breaker in a good circuit should last a very long time. Using it as a Switch can shorten that life. The only thing to wear it out otherwise is excessive current, that pops it too often.
