Low vision coil wrapping

So I have been playing with the Vivi Nova for a week or so now. I have low vision, and I'm still trying to wrap my own coils. I have the process down, i can get it mostly there, but my coils won't fire. Anyone have any ideas for something that might make wrapping the coils a little easier?

At times I've used a wire...20/22...maybe 24 ga(?) and wound it around double wick on a stiff, large paper clip. I wind the wire close, touching successive rounds, and then wound the Kanthal in the groves of the larger wire, which was copper. After that I remove the copper wired and have nice, evenly spaced Kanthal around the double wicks. Remove the paper clip and viola...and uniformly spaced coil.

how far can you space it? Keep having trouble making it too big and the coil touches the side of the cup. I figure this is part of why my coils don't work, I figure that would short them.

The larger the guide wire, the larger the spacing...and vice-versa.
