It's like curling up in a marshmallow. As they age, they get a little flatter, but they are still cushy.
That is our Rita. We got her when she had just turned 5 from Dachshund Rescue. I found her on Pet Finder, read her story and just knew she was the one. She is the most precious thing, the sweetest little dog I've ever seen. We had a dachshund mix when I was growing up, and I knew I always wanted another one. Plus I knew that I wanted a few things ahead of time. 1)Could not get up onto anything on their own, as in the couch or kitchen counters. 2)Didn't require grooming. Grooming costs can be really pricey. With her short hair, I can give her baths, and I can do her nails easily enough with the pedi paws dremel like tool.
The thing is though Dachshund Rescue doesn't really promote dachshunds for families with small children. Not because they can be known biters (some are, some aren't, Rita is not), but because of potential back issues for the dog, if children pick them up wrong, or drop them.
Rotties are a good choice too. Dave can vouch for that, but you need to be prepared for professional training if need be. They're a lot of dog and you need to be the one in control.

Yeah, I know...
