Would be interesting to see who buys the Marlboro brand name. The cigarette smoker market may be declining in the USA and other western nations, but in other markets it's not the case from what I have read over the last few years. Marlboro will still be a brand you see everywhere, regardless of who makes them.

It's also a joke... like an article from the onion.

EDIT: Hopefully this reply is down far enough that it does not spoil the joke.

I was wondering about that when I was skimming through it (didn't really read the whole thing). Seemed so odd to me they would just want to ditch a product that still has a large worldwide consumer base.

My cousin continues to smoke, even after vaping. Just last night he informed me that most don't buy Marlboro due to pricing. He mentioned "Freedom" brand cigarettes. $1.50 per pack vs $7.00 per pack... That's just crazy! Why would PM charge so much for a pack of cigarettes?
Because they can, and many smokers are loyal to their favorite brand regardless of price.

What?!?! Taxes are more than $1.50 in most states. Fed taxes are about a buck per pack. So even in the lowest state-tax areas, they'd have to be practically giving the damn things away to sell em at $1.50. Maybe in MO or something. But still, I'd be surprised.

Unless they're bootleg. "Freedom" brand...maybe. They'd be tax-dodging then, so sure.
