No, you only need a multimeter with pointed black and red leads. Set the meter to 200 ohms (I like to set it to the setting that also produces a tone if the circuit is continuous), put one lead into the center hole at the
threads, and the other to the outer
threads. The meter should give the resistance. Technically the black should go to the outer
threads ("ground"), and the red should go to the center hole ("hot"), but resistance does not depend on current direction, so it does not matter. If the value fluctuates a lot, the coil has broken, and its a dead carto.
