I've been vaping for a while now. I have tried several VV/VW mods and finally ended up with 3 Provaris and I love them.
I wanted something to play with, and I decided to get a mech mod. After some research, and a few recommendations from here as well as friends, I chose a smok Magneto.
I decided to go with a version 2 with the adjustable center pin that screws up and down rather than spring loaded. Seemed like it would have better conductivity, and less susceptible to resistance variance.
Seems like a great mech and I'm very pleased with it. Could have gotten it on line much cheaper, but I chose to support a local new B&M that are very responsible, helpful, competitively priced, and passionate about vaping (not just out to make a buck). Generally good people.
I bought a new Smok Caterpillar RDA to go with it. Nice little budget RDA, by the way. Comes with a drip tip that would cost what the whole RDA did. Reminds me of the Helios with more airflow holes and a better, buttery smooth control ring. Every review I've seen online says it only has airflow holes on one side.....wrong. Five on each side.
Sorry for the long post, I digress.
I chose to use AW IMR 18490 batteries because I like the size of the Magneto using them, and from my research I understand them to be a safer chemistry than protected ICR batteries.
My question is .... Should I use a "2 cent fuse" with these batteries?
With safety being a primary concern, I built my new RDA with 30 gauge Kanthal, 1/16th diameter, 10 wrap, dual micro coils for a total resistance of .9 ohms.
if I don't use a "2cent fuse", should I be using a different battery type?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You hear horror stories, so the first thing I did was to wash and dry the Magneto, and to check the vent for obstructions.
I'm not entirely sure what the limits of my batteries are, 16.5 amps I think.
I just want to use the safest, appropriate batteries and fuse, if recommended.
I may go into lower impedances for fun.
I just want to do it safely, that's why I wondered if the fuse would be recommended.
I consider myself an experienced vaper, but I know what I don't know. Never really did the mechanical "thing".
When I die, I know I'll probably go down instead of up ( :p ) , but I don't want it to because I was careless vaping.
Certainly don't want to be a poster child for banning vaping!

The AW IMR 18490 is a fantastic battery. I have used several different 18490/18500 batteries (including the new Efest Purples) and I think the AW IMR outperforms all of them (IMO).......

At 4.2 volts with a .9 Ohms coil, you're pulling 4.666 amps from the battery. That is WELL within the boundaries of the 16.5 amp limit of the AW 18490's....I subohm all the way down to .5 - .4 Ohms with the AW IMR 18490's with no issues.....at .4 Ohsms @ 4 volts that's 10 amps....still within the 16.5 amp limit....

So IMO you don't need the fuse, but hey...it can't hurt, right?

ps - the Magneto is a great mech to start out with...it's what I started with too....but be careful....buying mechs is VERY addiciting!! haha..... :)

If you want to just be safe and forget about it, get some decent batteries, MNKE or Sony VTCs. I personally use VTC5s. That way, you won't have to worry about a fuse or anything. It's not that much money for decent batteries. But they are 18650s though.

You will want to go lower ohm eventually. Trust me. Every guy gets that itch to rebuild once they see a new coil style on the internet.

So, have I not chosen a decent battery?
Not trying to be sarcastic, I honestly thought I had chosen the best battery. Based on a stickie by baditude, and googling it, but wanted to be sure, and if I couldn't be sure, is a fuse warranted?
Is there a battery that is better suited for mech use?
That is the reason for my post.
I'm sure I will want to go lower ohm and try things.
I want to make sure I am being responsible and safe about it, ( probably only thing thing in my life I'm being responsible about, to be sure).

The battery is fine, a decent battery actually. The fuse will limit how low you go though. I honestly did not notice the "AW" in your post. I don't know how low a fuse will let you go ohm wise, but I'd say you are fine without it. You may start to notice that 1100 mAh doesn't last as long as you want though.

To my understanding AW has the best 18490/500 batteries. For 18650s the Sony vtc5 (30 amp) and LG he2/purple Efest/EH 2500 mAh (20 amps) are among the best choices (though the red AW 1600 mAh should still be a good choice, it just has a lot less capacity). So you've made a good choice, I'd say :)

Thanks for all of the great advice everyone.
So, to summarize, if I continue to use my current batteries or the 18650's that have been mentioned, then the fuse would be kinda redundant?
I will probably go lower at some point, but I doubt I'll ever go below .5 ohm (roughly).
I thought I had made a good choice, with the info I could find, but it's great to be reassured by knowledgeable people who aren't trying to sell me something.
Thanks guys!
