Nice!:) is that a set of flush cutters i spot with the black & white striped handles?

ega2u3ad.jpg

Xuron flush cutters. The 420T on the right is angled and extremely tapered. Can cut flush in a messy octa-coil build.

Got from amazon but Abby Robey, Xuron's CS rep, was extremely helpful in helping me select the right cutter for our application. Goodbye nail clippers.

Here ya go ~ Reo Grand LP Tumbled Raw Aluminum.

I have the Para Coiler Jig that Magic Bill suggested and that thing rocks a perfect coil in seconds. For me it was worth every single penny :)

Xtreme you damn kicked me in the .... with that excellent specimen to get to riggin' up my own neglected hardware. Serves me right for the trouble. But I thank you for doin' it. So here she is fellas, a 32 AWG dual tensioned wire used to hand wind a tensioned T/P 6/7 on 3/32" yielding 1.3Ω. And a tight precise fit with barely a 10th mm clearance either side. Shown here after some care to maintain loop-to-loop alignment (difficult to do on an Immo) prior to perfecting adhesion on a ZNA30 at 10.6W after final 6th pulse. Some Nextel ReadyXWick is destined for this bridle. Here's some close contact for ya…

Grateful thanks to Justin/Bruce at Clouds of Vapor for havin' the wherewithal to early on get some of the adjustable pin caps for the ZNA from ZEN without which you'd never see an Immo ridin' one. And I've had four of those honey's just waitin' at the hitch. Finally got back to it. Grateful Lance too for puttin' up those remaining LE Zencote caps-n-switches for the spare tubes. Wish I'd snagged more.

Grateful to you Xtreme for your inspiration.

:)

Total coilnoob here. Read as much of the thread as I could, lol (from page 1000 till the end). Wanted to stop by and say thanks to Mac, Bill, SuperX, Mundy, and all the many others who have contributed so much to the art of coil winding! You guys make it possible for someone like me to sit down, read a few hours (days lol), and apply your tons of knowledge to make suddenly feel like an old pro, lol.

I got a Ehpro KFL 3.1 a week ago as my first rba. Everyone said "do Riptripperz microcoil build, itz da BOMB!" So I go and build, lets just say things were lacking, lol. I find Mac's Protank Microcoil thread, and this thread via that.

A few days of reading, and man, I built a COIL.

What i thought was a microcoil:laugh:

Here's a pic of the third coil I've EVER built, after reading this thread. Laying next to the first coil i built a week ago (never got used).

Couldn't have been easier. I used a 16 blunt needle, and ran the wire behind the collar, and screwed it down into the syringe, trapping the wire. Then I just wound it up, using as much tension as I could, without TOO much discomfort to my finger, lol (gonna wrap that finger with a bit of leather next time). Took the coil off, IT DIDN'T MOVE A MM. Success!!! No torching or squeezing needed, perfect tension wrap. Ended up with a 9 wrap 27ga 1.5ohm coil with a .065 ID, vapes like a dream and a huge improvement over years of cartos and stock Protanks. Thanks guys!:vapor:

To other noobs thinking about doing a tension coil, but don't wanna mess with/buy/make jigs, I highly suggest this method, super easy!:2cool:

SteamHead Dude! Welcome to the micro coil club. It is not that exclusive, but it is a rocking club.

Don't eschew the amazing awesome Artistic Wire Coiling Gizmo. $10 or less at your local B&M craft/hobby shop. Big dogs use 'em, and it works a treat. On the other hand, your coil should last a few months, so no worries. Dry burn that puppy from time to time and your SuperX coil will treat you like a king.

Proper manners suggest that you should heat before coiling. Could be a torch, a Bic lighter, or a gas stove. I did the gas stove method last time, and my wife could not stop laughing. It does make things a bit easier, and a real man likes to play with fire.

Welcome to the "this is amazing, the best freakin' vape I ever had in my whole life - it must be the micro-coil" thread.

What'cha doin' for wick? Real men use women's cosmetic cotton pads. I suspect some are wicking with their wife's cotton under... well, I will let that pass...

Get thee some Koh Gen Do or some Sheseido cotton pads. Be assimilated. You will not regret.

Been about 2 months since I've wrapped a coil Since my new Reo (and repair kit) is on the way, I decided to build a Cyclone I had lying around waiting for the new mod.

Usually, I build my coils to around 0.8-0.9Ohms so I was surprised that my new attempt metered out at 0.6! Decided to go with that anyway so I installed the atty on my Vanilla for the dry-fire/adjustment stage of the build. Fired it for about a second and a half and melted one of the legs...

Try #2, went a bit higher at 0.7. Test fire and another melted leg...

Try #3, same output at 0.7. I decided that since my Reo (with the old contacts) fired weaker than this mod, I'd dry fire there. But as I mentioned in another thread, my RM2 was cross-threaded on the Reo after it took a nasty drop on pavement while I was exiting my car. Since my kit was arriving anyway, I decided to take a chance and force the atty straight. It worked!

I installed the new Cyclone on my old Reo and finally got it to fire. The initial fire was as expected, a bit uneven with a hot leg so I adjusted the coil a bit with the screwdriver I used to form the coil. On the second attempt, it glowed perfectly. Decided to fire it a few more times to get rid of all the oils left from manufacturing the wire (I did not torch this prior to coiling). I noticed that e-juice seeped up the atty on its own (without squonking) while I was dry firing. Any of you noticed something similar with the Cyclone?

Since I got the RM2 out, I decided to meter it. I did not meter that coil since the atty was stuck well on the mod. What I thought was a 0.9 or so coil turned out to be 0.7! I never thought I was going that low on the ohms...

Building coils sure takes practice... I was really rusty after not building coils for 2 months (or so). I used to churn out coils in a few minutes without any issues.

I need a refresher... What causes hot legs on a coil again?

Decided to use the Cyclone just to see how flavor was. Squonked, and soaked the wick well before taking a hit. First hit was anemic... Took a nice mouthful of burning cotton on the 2nd hit. I guess the stock air hole is too small for a 0.7 coil. :D I have an AFC cap lying around so I'll use that with the incoming Reo. I have the RM2 back on the mod now vaping nicely even though I can still taste the nasty taste of burnt cotton.

So my foray into rebuilding after 2 months resulted to 2 molten legs, a wick turned into ash and 2 punctured fingers. Not bad for a noob! :D

Welcome to the club. A really nice micro you've got there. As others have said go with Koh gen do cotton and you're covered for a lifetime of great vapor.

E, if it's a micro coil with touching wraps, hot legs are common when you first fire the coil. Here's a trick to get rid of them:

Keep the the coil on your rod mount it and adjust to final position, tighten screws. Remove rod.

Trim coil tails.

Fire mod for a couple of seconds. Repeat.

Slide rod back thru and gently push pull like a cue stick and your setting up to take a shot.

Remove rod.

Fire for a couple of seconds. Hot legs should be gone.

If you are tasting cotton your wick is too tight. If you are tasting burnt cotton it is that your not squonking enough, your wick is too tight or both. :)

Thanks! Yeah my burnt cotton was caused by bad airflow more than anything. The stock Cyclone airhole is around 1mm I think and made for a pretty tight draw. The cotton taste I was describing was from taking a mouthful of cotton smoke. :D

I wonder with tension coils if we are also fatiguing the metal slightly? Could be the cause of my almost instantaneous molten leg on my first fire. I've never had a leg melt and snap on a rebuild before.

After receiving Rose2, I have switched from the above technique. Because of the way the Rose is built, wicking after mounting coil can be very frustrating, so I now wick the coil first then mount coil. Gives you something to hold on too, and to position everything just right. I then used the wicked coil mounting technique on the Flashi, basically a dripper base, it made mounting so much easier. Get everything all lined up, fold a tail up, if needed, to get at the screw. Once mounted, can easily remove wick and pulse and squeeze if needed, then stick the wick back in. Am really happy with the installs I do this way.

Just thought I'd share.

In response to the recent new indoctrinates into the World of Micro Coils, the methods learned here will allow one quickly, to become competent, skillful builder. I use the same techniques that were learned here on all my coils. Some of my rba's like a ~1/8" diameter, so I have several micro macro coils, well sounds better than midi coils, don't it?? lmao. It doesn't mater what your wrapping, or what diameter it actually is, if built with the techniques learned on this thread, well then my friend, it's going to Rock Vape, or is that Vape Rock?? hmm, it will Vape Rock!!! yeah , yeah, sounds much better. My Vape Rocks!!!

Vape long and Prosper!!!

Hey, have I missed any cool tools??? Have that damn Arty coiler, the mini Chuck and mini drill awl, which all three Vape Rock, especially for twisty wisty, timey whimey Doctor Who builds, lmao.

P.S.: the cat bites.

So, we were heading to lunch today and my Russian started tasting burned on the brand new cotton wick. I've been having occasional problems with burning using the rolled cotton...a few are too loose or too tight and I'm getting tired of it. We stopped into Sephora to see if they had the KGD, but as everyone has said, they only had the Shiseido cotton at the store. Being a manly-man, I made my wife do the shopping.

All I can say is, this stuff is great. It pulled through the wick so easily and has no cottony taste. So now I've got a TWO hundred year supply of wick material. I guess I need to order 1000 feet of Kanthal.

I got two questions:

1. What is a reasonable ribbon wire to get? There is 0.3x0.1 up to 0.8x0.1 and even 0.8x0.05mm. Should I go all the way?
I know you want to increase the "wicked surface area" while maintaining good heat flux, but really wide and flat ribbon wire could develop problems with actually getting juice to the middle of the ribbon on the side facing away from the wick?

2. Is a ribbon wire build even considered a micro coil?

3. Did anyone ever try to coil the ribbon wire "head on" so that the flat sides are facing each other? Maybe even wrap a thin silica thread between them while coiling? I guess I should just try it and report back lol.

Oops three questions :D

The size ribbon that you purchase should solely be dependent on the ohms you are reaching for, no different than choosing your standard wire. Here is a bit of information and includes a chart that will compare the equivalent round wire.

http://www.temcoindustrialpower.com/product_selection.html?p=flat_ribbon_kanthal
Resistance is dependent on ohms/ft and each size of either will measure differently.
Many of us have our favorite size and type of wire to work with and in time you will as well.
Yes, ribbon wire can be wrapped and considered micro or nano as the term is dependent on coil diameter.

This one is .5 ribbon, 1/16 jig @ .8
oeXygfF.jpg

kRkIorK.jpg

Please note as they are different ribbon sizes, the ohms are the same as. Hence the length of your coil will adjust your ohms as above mentioned.

Your 3rd question gave me diabetes trying to figure out what the hell you are talking about
