I definitely wouldn't advocate putting the coil so close to the air source that it obstructs it at all.
That said, I'm not thinking that aiming air at vapor is the mission here. I'm thinking aiming the air at the center of the coil mass is. I also note that my coil is only slightly longer than my 1/16" airhole.
When I try, as you suggested, (just now I did) to aim the air at either side of the coil it will direct air over wick. That always has and just did produce more TH and less vapor.
I'm talking about this very coil right here.
If you see that big hole beneath the coil on the right post? That's 1/16" just like my airhole. Not much room for the airhole between center and left or right side of the coil when the coil is that small unless it's out in wick territory and aiming air at wick is a no no unless you crave a somewhat anemic / choked vape.
For me the best results have always come from directing air at the center of the coil in horizontal and vertical planes. If I direct air off center horizontally = anemic / choked / wicky vape. If I direct it under the coil vertically TH increases the higher I raise the coil
All I run are .055" full contact micro coils
But if it works for you my brother, rock on
