Military Members - ID's - Photocopying is illegal

I thought that I would share some information to prevent Military members from getting into serious trouble.

It is against Federal Law (Title 18, U.S. Code Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701) to photocopy a military ID unless For Official Use Only. It is against Federal Law to photocopy any Military ID to show proof of service to any vendor.

I thought I would share this because so many vendors request a copy of a military ID to receive a discount.

A dd-214 can be copied and submitted as documentation it is not illegal to reproduce a DD214.

There are legitimate and legally allowed circumstances for copying a DD Form 2. One notable exception is as part of settling Tricare claims. Copying an ID for a military discount or to gain entrance to a night club are not legitimate uses and prohibited by law.

I've recommended to a few vendors, and other places, to have people use their official (.mil) email to show they are Military.

Also, for any Active Duty guys, you can usually submit an LES with any information (SS, pay amounts, etc.) blurred/blacked out as proof of service.

Maybe a VA Service connected ID card will work. I get my military discounts with it, no questions asked. But, I have never given a photo copy to anyone.

For proof I just use my FPO as my shipping address or my DoD email for my account registration, haven't had any issues to date.

well if you are a veteran you have a DD214

(And it is not illegal to photocopy or scan it)

So I just scan it and say Hey Im a vet, if you have any discounts available would you be so kind as to apply them?

I'd ask before providing a copy, but yeah that would probably work with any vendor that is inclined to give a military discount. Those that would give the discount know what a DD-214 is and what it looks like.

I would redact it a bit, at the very least you SSN should be blacked out... but there's a lot of info in there they probably don't need to see.

Hey since we're on the subject is there a list of suppliers who are known to give Veteran discounts or should we just ask everyone we buy from?
