OK, maybe this belongs in a mod subforum, but I'm pretty well set on KR808 format.....
and totally newb on "mods" I keep hearing about, so I may not even be talking about "mods" here...

Seems like a batt that runs on AA's or CR123s might be a good idea. If not, why not? Presumably its best if its rechargeable, but being able to pop in a commodity battery like AA's would have its merits in certain emergencies. Can someone explain "mods" in layman's terms? What would be a good one to start with for a KR808 guy interested in experimenting?

Plarkinjr sir aa batts don't put out the voltage needed to make them the top choice in mods (1.5v). You need 3 to get 4.5v, which adds weight (though the mah makes up for it in battery life). Cr123's only run at 3v which us why you usually find them stacked in mods for 6v.

As for what a mod is, it's a tube or box that contains one or multiple larger non propriety batts. The two most popular connections on a mod are 901 and 510. There are a few with kr808 connections but usually you'll need an adapter. The question is why do you want a mod? If it's for more battery life than you have a lot of choices in many price ranges. If you want something that is vari volt then you're looking to spend more...

Morandir, your question is exactly the one I'm trying to find the answer to: "Why do I want a mod?" Honestly, I'm not sure I do. I just hear all the talk about them and wonder: Can one benefit me?

I've a sizable investment in CR123 and AA "infrastructure" (lithiums, NiMh, chargers, etc), and maximizing utilization of that is always good. Seems 4 AAs at 1.2 would be 4.8 volts. Add one or use a pair of CR123s to get 6 volts (as has been mentioned), though I really only "need" 4.5+, but 5 is nice. And like I said, the ability to obtain power quickly at the General Store or >shudder< Wal-Mart if I find myself in "Podunk AR" is attractive (though I usually have spare AAs and CR123s in my "non-vaping" gear bags anyway).

Thanks for the wiki links and other input, y'all!

The first mod I bought was a Mini VapeStack from MadVapes and it uses a 16340/CR123. Works decent, simple. I don't chain smoke so the battery life is not bad but I would take an extra battery with me if going out to a nightclub, and an extra cart. The cart ran out more often than the battery. Now I use a Cartomator tank (no leaks) from NHaler and my own DIY mod and never run out of either. I have seen many warnings about people using NiMh batteries as they generally are not made to handle the output power/speed so use caution there.

Since I'm not a braggart, and I don't look cool to begin with (less so with e-cig of any sort), those would not be factors at all. Run-time and Durability would be primary factors, with flexibility/adaptability being close behind. I kinda notice a diff between my V4L batts vs my 5v passthru, but its not huge. I notice LR vs HR carts more. Thanks for the 411!

not sure what warnings you are talking about

i have been using my setup for 7-9 months with no issues

i have had a set get a little warm when charging, think i left them on too long
but put them in my mod and business as usual, lol

the warnings i heard were about li-ion
there was a thread on ecf about one exploding, if i am not mistaken

to my knowledge, nimhs will not explode

as far as power, etc, here as some facts from my day of vaping...

last night, before i went to bed, i changed my batts (5-aa-1.2v nimhs-2300mah)
didnt check the power, but usually starts out around 5.3v-5.5v under dcc load
i took a few toots then went to bed
i start hitting it as soon as i get up (6am), then many times throughout the day
i just got home (6pm), decided to check power and got 5.1v under dcc load
i usually change them when i get about 4.8v under dcc load to stay in my range
this time period is about 1.5 days

so imho, the only hangup with aa-nimhs is size, which to me is subjective, lol

vape hard yall !
