Hi all!

So I've been modding for a year or so and decided to grab some new batteries for a long weekend away without power. Only ones I could find available were nitecore 3400mah NL189s, so I grabbed them, charged up and was ready to go camping tomorrow. I randomly decided to check on them and realised they don't fit in my mods. They are 7cm instead of 6.5cm!

Since I've opened them all they are unreturnable. Would rather find a mod that can hold them if one exists. Otherwise they are off to eBay :) and I'm going dry this weekend...

Thanks in advance!

If it is written on package that they are 18650 I think they are very returnable.

I can't help you with any mod selections, but just a FYI, that model of battery shouldn't be used for vaping anyway.

Any 18650'sh battery with more than 3000mah will not have the amps (current handling) for current mech or regulated mods. The batteries that you have are probably rewrapped Panasonic 18650B 3400mah 6.7 amp batteries; excellent for a flashlight but dreadful for a mod.

You need an IMR or INR 18650 battery which has at least 20 amps continuous discharge rate (CDR). I suggest one of the 20 batteries tested and recommended by our Battery Mooch.

  • For those who want to learn the differences between IMR, IMR/hybrid, ICR, and LiPo batteries. What do those numbers and letters on batteries mean? What's an amp rating and why is it more important than the mAh rating when choosing a battery for vaping?

Sorry, I was wrong. Now battery classification based on length looks funny...

It does. But they weren't created for us.

I'm not sure any "unprotected" 18650s were intended for loose, consumer sales.
I may be taking too hard a line on that though.
But the bulk of production goes toward Power Mgmt System equipped packs... or Teslas. :p

Does it means that unprotected batteries are used (directly by consumers) only for vaping? If so, it's bad news.

No exclusively, but close.

The Torch Fans (flashlights) have taken to them as they mod brighter and brighter multi-element LED assemblies. Those need high-drain, high CDR cells just like we do. That means "unprotected".

Not sure what other hobbys use them versus LiPos (ie: RC toys).
