I'm watch fox, am conservative and could are less about someone's sexual orientation. Jus sayin... Then again being a conservative and of consenting age I do what I please and don't mind much what my parents feelings are. They watch msnbc (they only have 47 viewers total) and think George bush hates black people and the WTC bombing was an inside job. :)

OP: I, too, am a conservative who watches Fox News and is not interested in what happens in people's bedrooms with the doors closed. I vape after more than 40 years of smoking 30 cigarettes a day. I have 3 grown children and stopped trying to control them a looong time ago. That is something all parents have to learn to do. I don't think it has anything to do with vaping specifically, but with the fact that you're going to do things that, in her mind, you're doing behind her back. Well, what can I say... everyone needs to do a little growing up.

Congratulations on dropping the cigarettes in favor of ecigs, you've done the right thing for yourself.

I'm not even sure what else to say. My parents are very old school and they don't understand new tech as well as they should.

I was able to hide my cigarette smoking from them while I was in college as I lived out of state. She was in my house and saw the box for the Kanger Aerotank and the little bottles of juice when she opened up my drawer and asked me about it.

So I tried explaining that my eGo with the evod and my iTaste MVP with the aerotank are types of electronic cigarettes. She didn't believe me. She thinks that cigalikes are electronic cigs, which they are, but she incorrectly thinks these types of personal vaporizers aren't. I think my big ol box mod scared her, and the drip tip was confusing to her. She was accusing me of doing stupid stuff. While I agree smoking cigarettes was a stupid thing for me to do, the challenge is getting her to believe the truth that this is much safer.

I tried explaining that the juice gets heated up by the atomizer creating water vapor, and that the juice does have some nicotine in it (16mg in my blends), and that the juice I'm vaping is VG. She's really worried about my health and I told her that all I'm getting is the nicotine, and not the other 3000 (random number, I don't know the exact, nor would I like to know) chemicals that are found in cigarettes like the arsenic and the tar. I demonstrated that not a trace is left after all the vapor dissipates, but I'm wondering if she's thinking that this is too good to be true.

I think I need to bring up the fact that this is also much safer than cigars, which my dad smokes on occasion, but of course, it's perfectly okay when he does it.

What else should I say? I know my dad usually has more of a level head about things and I'll try explaining to him, but it's hard trying to explain things to someone who's very set in her ways and is very ignorant of other things. She listens to fox news all day long and is a die hard conservative who is very closed minded - even my bisexuality is a problem to her, so explaining this is also just as hard because she's so straight edge.

I like PBusardo's intro video to vaping, (and I love his reviews) but I feel like it's too long and winded, while very informative for getting the point across. Does anyone know of any other videos or reading material that's simple, straight and to the point? If it would make you say tldr; then she's definitely not going to read that. I need information for beginners that provides a good summary and barely scratches the surface. She's not going to sit through a 31 minute video.

Any help is appreciated!

Stop talking to your mom.

If she says you're smoking, say it's fog, not smoke.

Put some cigar flavor in your tank and let your DAD try it out.

I don't think you need to say anything else. You said she found these in your house, right?

Send her to the CASA website.

I'd have to agree with this; you've told her it's safer than smoking; if she can't accept that, oh well. Apparently you're an adult, so not dependent on the parental units.

My mom gave me the "I can't see that you've really quit" because the vapor looks so much like smoke, but I pointed out, no ashes, no fire, no CIGARETTE, so no smoke or smokING.

There's no point at all in arguing with those who have closed minds; it's 'water off a duck's back' as we say down here. A total waste of time. You know that old saying -- don't try to teach a pig to sing; it's a waste of time and annoys the pig. Same exactly.

Hopefully I can be forgiven for finding the op a bit cliche... There is not a single news source in this country that truly resembles accurate journalism more than it does professional wrestling.

Honestly, I was a bit startled that the op was referring to a bible belt family; when I was first reading it, I was asking myself which 3rd world country they were from. Which is also why I'm wondering if our respective chains are being yanked.

Interesting thread. On a related note, I noticed that my 17 year old daughter always seemed to have a pack of Cowboy Killers in her purse, or laying in her room. When questioned, she always says that they belonged to a friend. This week, I presented her with her own Halo Triton Iridescent 900 mAh, a pretty blue tank, and some sample liquids. She was delighted. I told her that the condition of this gift was to quit wasting money (my money) on cigs, and to keep it on the down low. If her mom finds out, we're both in big trouble...

Am I a bad dad?

See, my dad was hinting at me to try vaping for quite a while. He quit smoking over a decade ago and hated my smoking with a passion. I caught hell from him over it on numerous occasions. We actually got into arguments over it. Especially since I lost my mother to throat cancer due to smoking. Unbeknownst to me he was doing research on the subject. He dragged me to a vape shop, which I thought was just ridiculous. I thought the whole thing was just absurd. Why would I want to inhale some fruity vapor from some ridiculous looking device? I was a convert after tasting a few juices and introduced to the devices. Explain to them that you're making a positive choice and you'll spend more time on the planet for it. Direct them to some of the research people have done on the topic. It may just change their minds.

Not a bad dad at all IMO. Best to nip the smoking early on if possible.

NealBJr, I know that's not your real picture.... You're Doctor Phil, aren't you??? :toast:

Lol.. I wish I had his money. :)

No, I've just experienced it quite a lot and I've worked in Customer service for way too many years. Some people just cannot understand the truth, so a "close truth" is the best you can do. I always strive for truth though. :)

Nope. High potential to piss your wife off, but good dad.
If ecigs were around when I was 17 it might have saved me a lot of years of addiction.

Sounds to me like your parents still treat you like a child, and you allow them to continue to do it. That's not a vaping problem, that's a family interaction problem. If you're living on your own and supporting yourself then you need to stand up for yourself and demand to be treated as an equal instead of a child.

And if it was me, next time i was at their house, i would start rifling through their drawers and cabinets looking for "stuff". If they complained i would respond with "you think it's ok to do this when you come to my house" and keep right on going.

^^^^^^ this.
